I am interested in trying it on a bali handle. I have an adjustable dc voltage converter. Would like to find more information please.

I originally read the article in a Blade Magazine. I think its a 2000 issue. The cover was a Busse Basic #5. I dont know exactly where it is. It recommended using TSP (see my other post.) I didnt know where to get it, but apparently it is common in some household cleaners. Again, see my other post.

e-mail me and for $5 I'll snail-mail you a hardcopy of "Studio Preparation and Coloring of Titanium" by William A. Seeley. The $5 covers my costs of copying, postage, etc.

The article that Tony has mentioned is fine, I'm sure. But, its focus is RC Model cars. You can see that since the domain is rcmodels.com. The difference is just the size of the parts. In theory, Ti is Ti. But, I will say that Mr. Seeley suggests higher voltages.

This article also covers thermal coloring, anodic painting, and some other neat ideas.

That's exactly where it's different and the same. While RC parts are smaller, it's still a matter of the chemical reaction on the surface of the Ti. But unless the surface amount greatly affects the power of the input voltage, I don't see how the technique can be that far off. I can see how three 9 volt batteries may not have enough juice to sustain the necessary 27 volts to fully generate the desired colors, but with the proper output of a steady 27 volts, you should be able to attain the colors in the article. After all the colorization is the chemical oxidation results of the electrolyte's interaction with the surface layer of the titanium.

BUt you'll probably get much better answers in the Shop Talk forum, in the General Discussions. There's lots of knifemakers that uses the anodizing process on a daily basis especially on knives.

Thanks everyone. This sounds like an exciting project. I have been out poking around the garage looking for my dc converter, I think my neighbor or phantom racoon struck while I was reading the forum ...hmmm
