Where Do We Need To Improve

I read over EVERY thread in this forum to try to catalog ways that we could improve our khukuris. So far, I came up with the following list:

1. Chakma and Karda need refining (they are too soft and too rough)
2. Brass Bolsters (especially buttcap) should be thicker.

Please add to this list, as I will be presenting these "customer feedback" points to Lalit, who as asked for them.

Thanks!

I'd like to see more models(especially bowies and dirks) added. I know this has more to do with the kamis, but that's the only "complaint" I could come up with. Maybe a few more kits too. Just my $.02

Craig,

A fully functional presentation 15" Sirupati with waterbuffalo horn handle inlaid with brass designs, sheath made from solid waterbuffalo horn inlaid with brass designs.

Book me for 3 of these beautiful knives.

I have one, and only one, "complaint" (if you can call it that). I'd like to see the butt-caps more rounded instead of coming to a point on the upper and lower edges.

Any khuks I have for display are left in tact, but any I intend to use are immediately given a file and stone treatment. Those needle-like points catch my clothing and skin if left unrounded and they can do some damage if you get caught up in them.

The problem is that during the rounding process the handle material always gets scratched from the file and stone. I can never seem to get the brass and handle material blended and polished to match the original finish. Hey, I'm a mechanic not an artist

Give me a nicely rounded butt-cap and I'm a happy camper.

Craig,

With regards to the karda and chakma, I think that it would be nice if they were a little bigger. They are a little too short and thin IMHO.

1) I like the idea of a Scottish Dirk.

2) Offer more full tang versions, like the sirupatis and WWII.

3) I love my 18 inch panawal, how about an 18 inch sirupati, WWII, and (cross my fingers) WWIII? Full tang on all these would be a plus.

Overall I think you're on the right track and I agree with your list. The buttcap on the panawal is thinner than HI khuks. The chakma should he harder. I like the suggestion of a larger karda. The blade lenth doesn't bother me as much as the two-finger handle. It's difficult to use.

I have a question. The panawal does'nt have a brass bolster. That's the piece between the handle and the blade, right? Is that steel? Can you have a steel buttcap too?

I agree with Blackdog about the grip profile. It`s not that the grips are "bad" as is,just that they could be better. A nice oval shape would make it more work friendly. I second the karda and chakma comments as well. Again it`s not a big thing,I`ve always thought of them as more decorative than anything but if they were truly functional it would be a nice bonus. Some neat future improvements(options) would be making the WWIII treatment an option on more Khukuris and having kydex sheaths for different models as well. A 15" WWIII type Sirupati and 20"WWIII type AK would sure look good with my WWIII.

Everybody: Thanks for your comments, and keep them coming. While we can't finish the khukuris coming from Nepal the way the WWIIIs were treated (because the handles are already attached), we ARE building kydex sheaths for a large part of our inventory. As the sheaths are custom made to each knife, we will only maintain a relatively small supply of them. In other words, people won't be able to send their knife in for "sheathing" unless we are already doing a run at Edgeworks.

Larger handles?
This would also go a long way to "fixing" the pointed buttcap "problem".

How about a double-hollow-ground blade like some of those antique beauties I've seen. Maybe an ivory hilt?

You know that brass wrap at the base of the scabbard? I'd like it better if it's rounded instead of pointy. I suppose it looks more traditional that way, but they serve no purpose as far as I know.

ALL GREAT COMMENTS! Thanks for the input. We can't do ivory hilts this time, but will be doing some white horn handles (and some "alternate ivory" handles using some good looking stuff I bought from Koval). We'll see how they turn out.

We're off!

Regards,

Craig and Marya
