I'm just posting this to find out where everyone gets their batteries. I'm sick and tired of buying the Duracells at Wallyworld for $6 per battery.

I bought mine on sale at Botach Tactical, 20 for $25. Same advice when dealing with Botach, buy what's on sale in stock, don't order what isn't there! Do a search in Good, Bad and Ugly on Botach and you'll find other's experiences with them. Mine has been good, but their communications leave something to be desired.

Another who buys 'em on sale at Botach, $26 for 20 last time. They normally sell for $30 for 20 batteries. When Botach cuts prices, chances are GOOD that they've actually got 'em in stock.

Word to the wise. For $2 more you can buy 123L which are lithium batteries that have 3X longer last time than the alkaline. I get mine at Battery Barn locally.

You know what....they no longer offer the 123L and the 123a is now only sold as Lithium. Damn, I feel old. I remember when the lithiums came out. My bad, please ignore me.

I buy 223 batteries and split them. It is the cheapest way to get em. You can also get good deals on 123s if ya don't wanna split em.!

I bought 3 auctions of six 223s from that guy and it was great! Super fast shipping, but not the cheapest shipping. It was $10.50 shipping for the three auctions, even though the actual postage was about $4-5.

Whatever you do, find a very sharp knife to open the batteries up with!

Jason: I'm not familiar with the 223 batteries. Are they just 2-123 batteries? Any chance of ruining them while splitting them? I'm really curious about this as it seems there are some really nice deals that can be had for 223's.

Thanks,

Dan

I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, a 223A cell is just 2 123A cells taped together? If that's the case, cheapbatteries.com has 223A's for $2 each for small quantities, and $1 each for quantities over 100. If that's the case, I guess I'm going to be ordering a bunch of 223A cells for my E2's, Z2s and such.

I just bid on some of the 223s. If they work as advertised here, I'm going to get 100 of them from Cheap Batteries. :D

The 223 cell is simply two 123A cells (naked) facing opposite ways in a plastic case. There is a metal strip that connects the two cells.

I used my Cold Steel Recon Tanto to chop them right in half, metal connector and all, and then popped the single cells out. You have to wrap the cells in something to prevent shorts.

I got some of the 223s in this morning.

I've already peeled one, split them and wrapped the idividual cells in 100mph tape. Works like a freakin champ in my old 6P/P61. :D

Good thread, perfect timing for me...

Last night, my wife took my SureFire 9P, takes three of those little batteries!!! and went in search of a cat that adopted us, the cat had kittens and my wife is trying to locate the hidden nest...so off she goes with my 9P, unknown to me that she turned it on full and sat and waited for the cat to appear, 30 minutes or so later she comes home and says it was getting too cold and the flashlight seemed to be dimming and was VERY hot...WOW I was beside myself but held back as she didn't understand the purpose of the special lamp assembly and how expensive those batteries are! So now I need some and will check out these sites for some deals!
Thanks,
G2

One word of caution I'm sure someone hit on. Don't old the naked battery on one hand and pull the metal strip off with a Leatherman. You get little sparks and hot spots.

I simply held the sides of the batter with a piece of paper wrapped around it and no more "issues".

Not that I don't use single 123s anymore, but I've been doing the "223 split" occasionally for a while now.

Most of the 223s that are being split will need a quick wrap with tape of some sort, but don't use so much that it needs to be stuffed into a flashlight to use. Some flashlights have a pretty close manufacturing tolerances, and won't allow alot of tape build-up.

Thinner tapes like Scotch, un-reinforced packing tape, or electrical tape. Some of the racer tapes are pretty thick, so make sure you pick the right one. You can find some of these tapes in 1-1/4" or 1-1/2", run a single wrap, and trim it when using the 1-1/2" width.

Vartas (a Euro brand) come with a thin plastic coating already on the individual cells, they're ready to separate and drop right in.

Not sure how many other brands come with coating. I know that Duracells don't.
