I want to try my hand at making a few leather sheaths. But don't want to sink alot of money into it. Been looking online, and am somewhat overwhelmed by the choices in leather. Also, seems like a I have to either kick down $40+ for a big shoulder, or get a bag of scraps that may or may not work. Can anyone point me to a good kind of leather that I can get in small/cheap quantity?
thx!

You can get 12"x12" squares of leather from usaknifemaker.com in two different thicknesses.

Both Jantz Supply and Texas Knifemakers Supply sell fair quality sheath-making leather in small sizes. One sells 12"x!2" and the other sells both 12x12 and 12x24. The 12x12 costs about $10.

If you are wanting to make "a few sheaths"...factor in some waste material, and some mistakes....no offense, but you just might make one.... $40 is not an unreasonable price to pay for some leather.
