I finally found and aquired one of the hinged and latched box/display case for the old style Kalinga 401. It has paperwork in it with no date. I have two of the oldies with micarta handles, one with the tang stamp read tip up, the other tip down.

My question is: Is the box correct for one or the other or both?

Dave, I've seen both knives in your photos in that box. Also, I've seen black color printed papers in with the 3 line inverted stamped 401 . Yours has a red booklet, I've seen that one and a black printed booklet.
The box looked the same for both knives it was only the printed materials that were different. I'm sure that box is correct for an early Kalinga (71-72). Also, that early paperwork didn't have a date as I've looked at several and none have those numbers we know to look for on the last page. The next box that came along for that model did not have the metal hinges and front locking hasp the rest looked the same (late 70's perhaps 78-79). If you read the red booklet it should have a story about a native tribe that used that style of knife. Eluding to where the name originated from.
Those are rare knives I can still run across them and with the sheath you show. But the box and papers, I've seen two in the last 10yrs. that I recall and neither one the owners were willing to part from them. Even though I offered them enough money to make them smile they still shook there head, no.Thanks for showing them. DM

I have a box like that, and the knife has the stamp readable with the blade pointed up. Many of those boxes have disfunctional (best word I could think of) latches. I paid $85 for mine at a gun show.

Yes, the metal in those latches are soft and easily worn. Tony, your 401 was made in that configuration up until 1981, the box as well. If you got all the paperwork with that purchase you got a buy. The inverted stamped model with all the paperwork was the one I was trying to buy. DM

Thanks for the info David! I bought the knife in 1996 at the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife show (largest gun show east of the Mississippi). I had bought a new gun safe and needed some cool knives to keep the guns company. The Kalinga is just one of those knives that radiates a special attraction. I can see where owners have a hard time parting with them. Sorry the pics are not the greatest but I just dug it out of the safe for a few quick ones.
