Ill post this in General Knife Discussion too for more replies.

Im looking to get my first traditional folder. What would you guys recommend. A canoe style knife? Trapper? Toothpick? Congress? Etc. I would like it to be a slip-joint like the ones I just mentioned, no lockbacks etc as Im most likely going to have it shipped from the USA to Australia, and its illegal to import any knives, although I should be able to get away with slipjoints. Thanks in advance

Depends.

Where do you work?

How do you dress for work?

What do you exept your pocket knife to handle?

What kind of activities do you do for fun?

Do you want carbon or stainless steel?

All are important factors in picking a knife. Do you like small and inconspicous or is that not a factor?

You may be satisfied with anything from a peanut to a daddy barlow.

The knife would be used for simple cutting tasks like opening packages etc. I would like one so I could pull it out in a public area and not get crazy looks from people. I dont mind about blade or handle materials, aslong as it looks good and has an elegant look it if you know what I mean.

Case Chestnut Bone CV Medium Stockman. Its about the nicest looking knife Case has to offer right now IMO. That or the Sway Back Jack in Chestnut Bone CV. You can't go wrong with either, or both!

Aye aye on that CASE Medium Stockman choice, remember it comes as a serpentine back too and with stainless.Either one gives you three very useful blades in a compact trouser/pocket friendly form, many decent scale choices as well. A Whittler is a first-rate three blade alternative that is not too heavy or obtrusive either.

You are set on a long never ending road, the first one whets your appetite all others fuel the obsession!
