for doing knife sharpening and maintenance beforeI strop with Green Veritas compound on my leather strop to finish? I can't afford the $100+ DMT sharpeners at this stage (I need to buy a HR) and the small ones don't interest me since I'm a novice to sharpening. I recently got the hang of stropping. Hoorahhh! :D Now for sharpening 101...

1. Norton India Combo Stone : Fine/Medium grit http://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-ProductSpec?NOiM2
2. Norton Combo Water Stone: 1000x or 4000x or 8000x http://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-ProductSpec?NO24450
3. Arkansas Whetstone: Hard stone http://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-ProductSpec?AC18

All three above come in about a 8-10" x 2" section...for ease of use. I can also use all of these either dry or wet with water.

Thanks in advance, its for my CT....

The Norton combination fine india and medium carborundum should be on your bench, whatever other stones you elect to buy. It's my go-to stone for most uses. I've had mine for 30 years, and use it almost every day for kitchen knives, as well as most other cutters. The price is right too.

I'm new to sharpening convex edges, whou would you use a rigid stone for them?

I've been reading and posting, posting and reading some more...but the general answer is YES. Sharpen a severely dulled blade, a chipped or dinged up edge or realign an edge with a hone, then finish off with a strop. Stropping is perfect for maintaining a sharp edge - polishing off to a hair shaving edge. My two cents...but I thank all the awesome advice I got from these forums. Without it, I would have been lost. You guys are invaluable.
