Whitley Tomahawk

Hi Andrew... Great Picture, very good detail! All though I don't share you taste in blades, except of course the ones that you make.

I hope to see you at the show, if your going with the rest of the boys from NC.

Howdy There Andrew.....!
Looks great, was that the one that Wayne had at the last NC guild meeting. Tried to find out what he use for the finish on the handle. Have you been busy lately...? Congrats on the vp office. Hope to see ya in Atlanta.

I have a thing for hawks, especially the minimalist ones like this. Looks like very fine work, and the wood grain of the haft looks terrific. A neutral background would contrast the wood nicely though. Curly maple? How can I contact Mr Whitley?

narruc1, I will be sharing David Baker's table at the Blade Show. I just finished my last knife before the show, and I plan to take a picture of it tomorrow to post in the Gallery.

Thomas, I believe that the tomahawk that Wayne had at the NC Guild Meeting is one of three pieces being raffled off for the Show in September. Guild members will ahve tickets to sell. Both hawks have a tool steel core wrapped with one layer of nickle silver and then lower cardon jacket. I believe that Wayne uses potassium permanganate to stain his wood handles. Maybe tongue oil for the final finish. By the way, one of my responsibilities as VP for the Guild is to arrange demonstrations for the meetings. If you, or anybody else who attends the meetings, has suggestions or know someone who wants to do a demo please feel free to contact me. I'm planning to do a beginners (me) demo on digital photography at the next meeting.

Andrew L, Thanks for the feedback about using a neutral background. Wayne Whitley can be reached at 252-946-5648. All of his work is top notch (I mean it)!

I beleive Wayne uses Feiblings leather dye on his Curly maple... either that or he once used some stuff from brownells that was used for frontier rifle stocks...had some chromic acid in it or something.... made an awfull mess of my hands for weeks!

I have said this before but it bears repeating. Wayne Whitley does some of the cleanest forged and stock removal work that you can find. He is extremely talented yet he is very humble at the same time. He is also one of the most giving knifemakers I have ever met. He is willing to share anything with you and quite often does. That is my $.02 worth.

BTW Andrew, I agree with others about the background. Other than that it is a great pic.

See you in Hotlanta

Thanks for the link Andrew!!

I only wish that Wayne had a website with his work displayed. I sure many other 'hawk collectors will feel the same after seeing this pic.
