Does anyone have a favorite knifemaker who forges excellent using blades at reasonable prices? Thanks!

There are plenty of good makers that forge. What type of knife are you interested in. I would suggest picking up a Knives 99 book by Warner. There you can see examples of work and the address's of the makers. If you find someone you like and don't want to wait then there are also plenty of dealers who specialize in selling custom knives.Les Robertson who moderates this forum deals in them as many others who can be found in the links section here.Hope this was of some help. As far as pinpointing just which maker my list would be much to long and biased LOL.

I guess it depends on what one considers reasonable prices. In my opinion the best value for quality in the "forged" arena is Joe Flournoy. Another maker that makes a good knife for a great price is John Fitch. I have one of Johns Utility/Hunters, use it daily and really like it alot. Another factor is that you can usually find a knife or two floating around by these makers available.

If price/time is not a factor than Tim Zowada Harvey Dean, and Jerry Fisk would be at the top of my list.

I would strongly agree with Daves list, especially Don Fogg and Micheal Connor. I have had 3 of Dons knives, all were very nice and unique. Have one of his tantos coming soon. I was glad to see Micheal Connor get a little press in the last K.I., ive had one of his fighters on order for a while now. Dont be in a rush for one of his knives, he qouted me at least 5 years, maybe longer.

There are many great Master Smiths out there, however, i wouldnt get too caught up in that stamp. This is not to slight the ABS or its Journeyman/Master ratings, i think they are very good ideas... but there area many makers out there that are "Masters" but arent in the ABS at all.

Hi Larry,

Give me your "reasonable" price range, style, materials for blade, guard, handle and pommel and I will give you the maker name to contact.

Fogg, Keesler, Flournoy, Goddard, top of the line makers (read: big money, long wait).

This is why you need to narrow your focus.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

Thanks guys!! Someone mentioned Tim Zowada and he makes outstanding "using" knives, as I have one in L-6 and one in twist Damascus. I also have a couple of forged knives on order from makers on this forum and I'm very anxious to get their work. As in anything some guys forge better knives than others and I'm interested in those who forge good using blades that are affordable, at least to me. I have forged blades by several guys and they all are good, Donald Lange and Dave Ber are a couple of other excellent makers.
Les...am looking for a blade around 3 1/2" with nickel trim and Desert Ironwood/Cocobolo handle, high carbon steel and excellent workmanship. I think you know what I want when I say a good "using" blade! Thanks!!

Forgot to mention Rob Hudson. His knives are very nice, cut well, built well and all have that special little "something".

I got to meet Rob at the Guild Show, super nice fellow.

For a good using knife forged one can't go wrong with something from Brian Lyttle of High River. Alta. He is doing marvels with his heat treat and edge geometry. Try lyttlel@cadvision.com
Another maker that has well priced using knives is Kevin Cashen krcashen@mvcc.com
