If you've been following this forum over the last couple months you are aware that I bought a grinder and some blade stock. Well, I've been grinding away like mad, and I will be ready to send some blades off for heat treating before too long. Who are the good treaters? I've heard Ernie Mayer mentioned a couple time. I've also read about Paul Bros. Will these guys treat blades from little fledglings like me? If so, how do I get in touch? Is there anyone else out there I should know about? I'm using 1095, 440C and ATS-34.

Thanks for any advice. I've decided I can't really do this myself just yet.

TTFN,
Tony

Thanks, Steve and Darrel. Anyone else. I should be making my decision soon.

Darrel - how do I reach Ernie?

Thanks again,
Tony

Tony: Just a suggestion: Call some heat treaters and speak with them. Ask questions. Do they like working with, or have they ever worked with, knife blades/
What equipment do they use? What cycles will they run on the various steels? How about sub-zero treatment? Rockwell testing? How tight will they hold the hardness values? How much do they charge?

If the main guy is easy to talk with, and interested, you'll know. If he's too busy, or not interested in that type of work, you'll also know. You want someone who cares about what he does, and has the right facilities to do it in. I think that is as important as anything else. BTW, I used O&W heat treat in East Windsor, CT for years. Pat Olheiser, @860-528-9239. Never had a problem, never lost a blade.

Thanks, RJ. Great suggestion. I'll collect a few names and start calling. I appreciate your advice, and the advice of others. These forums seem to always come through.

Thanks,
Tony
