The service that hosts my website just improved the software that sends my biweekly reports on activity. The new, improved report includes statistics on hits by hour of day. My site has a massive spike between 4 and 5 pm EST.

What's up with that?

Not to brag, I'm amazed myself, but they tell me that there are 751 pages on my site! I find that hard to believe, but they do count a the cases where you can click on the picture and see a higher-resolution view (and some of them offer three resolutions) as two (or three) separate pages. There's a lot of silly little pages too. But, it's still amazing to me.

This new report, like the old report, tells me how many hits each page got. There is one page on my site that nobody has ever looked at except me. It's not a hidden URL. You can get there by following links off the main page. Every now and then, I go there myself just to make sure it's still there. And, when I do that, sure enough, one hit shows up on the next report. Otherwise, that page has never shown up in the report.

If it's weekdays, I may have an answer. From a Financial/Trading firm environment, I can tell you that between 4:00 and 5:00, almost everyone in the firm surf the web to wind down the day before they head home at 5:00. Though, never had one stop me to ask about your site (yes I'm known to be a bali freak). Quite possible a common phenomenon for other firms.

Judging from a large proportion of the crowd around these parts, i would say that school has just gotten out:)

That does surprise me too Chuck?? That's really a significant spike! Do they run any sort of "history register" for you....-meaning-....has this gone on for months and months....with statistical consistency...or the spiking illustrated represents most recent activity?

what page is never visited? now i'm curious. if you tell me, next time you get the report, you'll have 2 views. :)

Hmmmmm... I wonder what that mystery page is? Post a link Chuck, I'm sure we'll add some hits to your statistics.

And everyone is right about the 4 o'clock spike. My best bud owns an ISP and has shown me bandwith graphs. Always spikes around 4 o'clock. Must be the statistical average of everyone's first hour or so of free-time based on the normal workday and school. Very interesting.

I like the idea of all those wealthy Wall Street traders relaxing at the end of a stressful day by firing up balisongcollector.com. I've seen videos of the close of the day on Wall Street. The bell rings and everyone cheers and throws up all their notes and runs for the doors. Now I know what they're cheering for: It's balisongcollector.com time... Last one logged on is a rotten egg.

As for my lonely, unvisited page, just giving y'all the link would be to easy. 751 pages folks, go to it.

First to find the mystery page wins their choice of any piece in Chuck's collection? I'll hold my breath.:D

oh, i'm setting the feds so investigate. i'd like a lil' sumpthin out of chucks collection! :D

now we are all wandering throughout your site and your traffic is skyrocketing. Tell me the truth- there is no such mystical unvisted page is there?:D

hahaha! yeah, this is just a mean trick from chuck to increase the traffic. he probably faked his report - what really happened was that he got a note from his isp saying something like very low traffic - we might close your page. you sure are sly, chucky. :p

CBS can charge more for a commercial slot than other networks because statistics show that more people watch CBS. CBS gets more "hits" than other networks.

Similarly, websites can charge for advertising space based on hits. That's the major reason to track hit rates.

But wait a minute. There is no paid advertisement on my page. I routinely turn it down. The result: I really don't care about hit rate. I was doing this page back when it's hit rate was all but zero. I'll keep doing it even if the hit rate goes to zero. Why? I enjoy sharing with whomever wants to look.

So, why do I even look at the reports? Mostly to see what people are interested in.

For example, I used to offer each picture at three or even four resolutions. I thought that people with high res monitors and fast pipes might appreciate seeing some pictures in great detail. But, the stats showed that virtually nobody looked at the higher res pictures. So, I don't put 'em up anymore. SXGA wallpaper? Almost no hits. So, I don't offer it anymore. The old ones are there, but I'm not going to make any new ones. People like wallpaper. The stats prove it. They won't download my big pictures, but they sure go for XGA and even UXGA wallpaper. So, I've been offering more wallpaper.

When this new report came with it's analysis by time of day, I really found that huge spike between 4 and 5pm EST must unbelievable. But, now that it's been explained as Wall Street just relaxing with a balisongcollector fix after a hectic day of trading, well, I understand.

Actually, I log on to your page every day at 4:30 and hit refresh a bunch of times. Mystery solved. :)
