Why a long knife ?

As far as I can tell it would be better for it to rotate a little slower . That way you can judge better how they impact if you are off .

Just to show the opposite side of the coin I was throwing dinky little knives today and could barely tell how they hit unless they stuck .

Right, when I throw a longer bladed knife, sometimes I throw it under handed
and it makes a nice slow arc, grip by the blade, giving it half a turn it can
travel quite a distance and stick quite solidly.

A friend and I used to practice under handed throwing while walking through
the woods, using stumps as targets, not straight into them, but arcing the
throw so that it turned one and a half times to come straight down onto
the top of the stump...

Gary I too enjoy underhand throwing . Unfortunately I have been sent back down to the minors so I have had to give up my preferences for now .

I was only good with my long heavy throwers so I have another reason to abstain .

Underhand throwing into the top of a stump ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I,m wearing a hardhat when I throw around you ! L:O:L

Actually that sounds tough and a lot of fun . What distances are we talking about ? How long and heavy were the knives ? I have long suspected that someone good at horseshoes would be good at underhand throwing .

I enjoy horseshoes too! :)

Distances were probably close to 25 to 30 feet, never actually measured
them as we were just walking about, good practice.

One of the knives was an old TruBalance bowie, pretty longish blade, the others
were bowie type, not meant for throwing, but worked ok for it.

As to height, we didn't lob them that high in the air, so not to worry with a
hardhat, they did a nice slow arch as they went through the air.
