I'm not new to knives or knife collecting, but I have steered clear of online forums for many years. I'm an old USENET hack and know how unpleasant some boards can be. I used to write FAQs for unmoderated groups in the eighties and know how trolls and advertisers can ruin a good discussion group.

1) This is a welcoming community of posters. You would be surprised how often that is not true;

2) "Keyboard Commandos" have no place here. If you have too much time on your hands and have an axe to grind, this isn't your venue;

3) It is not dominated by commercial interests or commercial priorities. This is key in my book. Only BladeForums passed this test;

4) The moderators seem to be rational individuals, who have clear standards and clear motives;

5) Even unpopular makers can be discussed without undue reprisal. Sure, there will always be detractors, but this is expected. I tested this, early on. Only BladeForums passed the test.

I think you made a good accessment about all. I have been here a few years now and have really enjoyed this community. Cheers to everyone who makes this an informative and entertaining place to escape!

Blade Forums is the best and the ONLY one I visit. Tried others, dislike all the commercials. Now everyone that reads this post send money to Spark. I just did.:D

I can agree with this statement 100%.

My first online forum experience was CPF(candlepower forums), and for anyone who's been there, you know how nice of a community it is to deal with, and finding another forum that can compare if few and far between, this place however, seems to be the knife equivalent of CPF.

The amount of knowledge here is just incredible, just earlier today in fact I was sharpening my BM 930, just trying to touch it up.. but I couldn't get it sharp, and it irritated me so much I decided to come here and just look around for an answer, it turns out I was just putting too much pressure.. thanks to this place, my 930 is now scary sharp, and so are all my other knives.

I look forward to learning much and collecting many knives, and hopefully answering questions of people in the future who will be where I am right now.

Best Regards,
Steven

Thank you richard j, I'm glad you had something useful to contribute. Your post is very friendly, informative and noncommercial. You serve as a perfect example of the type of member Halbie was not talking about.

I agree with the assessment. It feels like my other forum (my-symbian). Moderators are very important to make a forum works, and here, they're simply great!

Right on, Halbie!:thumbup: I'd like to add that I feel Bladeforums is without a doubt the best darn knife discussion forum community around, and the Moderators and members are some of the wittiest, most kind-hearted and knowledgeable people I've ever conversed with. Heck, even the trolls are more entertaining in this forum community.:D

I agree with everything said about the forum in this thread. Also, free giveaways for us, which is good when you only have a pathetically small collection of knives (I wouldn't even call it a collection).

Warning issued to the clueless.

Do you know how many people Richard has helped here. He is an example of what this community is about. I have lost count people he has stepped forward to help.

Insults (especially the clueless ones such as the one above) are not tolerated in the discussion forums and those who feel they are entitled to do so are not welcome here at all.

These two reasons are the main reason I'm here. Nothing wrong w/ making money to keep the board going, but too much commercialism is not my thing. And making things clear makes for a good experience.

Good post.

I agree, The Blade Forums are second to none, with great people who have a great hobby in common and thanks to the Mods and Spark for making this all happen.:thumbup::)

good thing you were not around when the founder was in control, he ruined rec.knives, knife forums the benchmade forum and almost ruined this one.
