Does no one like the 'hawk anymore? I miss all the nice imput that everyone had on 'hawks and axes of all kinds.

I'm still searching for that nice place that I can go to to find out about 'hawk fighting or perhaps medieval handaxe fighting techniques. Even a book on it would be nice. Anyone got any suggestions or links to such helpful info?

Can I perhaps spur a nice discussion on maybe just how great these little bugger's are and how useful they are? What all do you use your's for (axe or 'hawk)? Where do you carry it (hunting, hiking, urban, etc...)? How do you carry it? Anything?

I too love the ax and am dissapointed whenever I check in here and find no activity. For me though it is less as a weapon but more as a romantic link to simpler times. I have a hard time passing up about any old ax/hatchet when at garage sales, flea markets or antique stores and have accumulated more than a few. When I hold one and run my hands over wood and steel it can be like looking into an old photograph. Visions of shelter being built, and fire wood made to cook with and survive a cold night come to my mind.

I carry one in my pickup at all times. Over the years it is called upon only rarely to do minimal tasks, but still it is comforting to have along. I have a wood buring barrel stove in my barn and sometimes I wonder if the main reason I have it is so I have a reason to chop and split. I have several in "felling ax" size, "boys ax" size and some hatchets too. They all have their own personality and I enjoy keeping there edges tuned up.

I have always had a hatchet of some kind even as a kid and spent many hours throwing it at trees pretending I was fighting off bad guys like I seen Mingo do so many times on the Daniel Boone show. I use a hatchet or boys ax when I am doing pre-season hunting lane clean up.
The hatchet is handy in a day pack and a boys ax is great when something a little bigger is desired.

Some time back my two teenage boys and my wife and I made a weekend trip to Kansas City. While there I discovered and purchased a GB wildlife hatchet as I had read so many great things about the GB line of ax's on here. My wife noticed that from the minute I bought it that it was never out of one of our hands that entire weekend. As we drove around KC one of us always had it in our hands. Finally after two and a half days she asked me, "what is it with that hatchet that you boys can't leave it alone and put it down?" My guess is that it is in our male genetics. The natural desire to provide food, shelter and warmth all represented by that little hatchet.

I too feel the pleasure of owning a tool that has carried humankind so far in history. There is definatly a romatic side to them and it does bring me back to my childhood.

I have the small coldsteel trail hawk and the first time i brought it out into the bush with me we were going down a steep 4wd track and we found that the road had been blocked by a tree the size of a telephone pole. We would not have been able to turn around or reverse due to the trailer we had on the back and the steepness and the bush touching both our doors so my mate was very worried. I told him dont worry i have a tomahawk. When he saw the small size of it he looked evan more worried and told me not to bother but after about 2 minutes of me hacking the pole he gave it a go and we had it chopped and out of the way in about 20mins.

We had 3 other car loads of mates to come down the track a few hours later and when they saw the chopped pole they new it had to be me and one of my crazy weapons and all insited of haveing a go with the hawk and all said they wanted one.

This is an example of the opposite of murphys law as i had never brought a hawk before and i had never seen such a big tree block my path.

I think i have converted a few hawk fans that weekend.

I have a hawk on order from Craig Camerer. I will post it when he finishes it. From the sketches, it is going to be awesome! I really like hawks, surprised this place isn't more active as well.

Pictures coming soon,

I have a project to finish for another maker that I HAVE to get done. Once that monkey is off my back I'll be more actively posting here. There are a couple of pictures on my website that you can look at. I get some finished and never even think to take a picture of them before I sell them. I need to stop doing that.

Hey FSCJedi,

I just ordered a Tomahawk fighting tape from James Keating of Comtech.
I'll let you know how it is after I get a look. As for books, Dwight McLemore is doing a book for Paladin Press titled Trace of the Tomahawk. Hope this helps.

good thread!
same here...I allways look at this part of the forum without to find a lot of threads...

My interest in hatchets and tomahawks started when I was very young, I've allways owned a kind of handy hatchet I could take with me, it was like a "have to have" item...
Few years ago I buyed my first Tomahawk...from Cold steel. There was no edge on it but the feel was feeling right so I went at the local gunsmith and asked him to put an edge on it. This hawk was Ok but not better than my GB...
So I found another Cold-steel hawk... the Trail Hawk. It was Ok too, light easy to take everywhere and practical.
Then I found ATC... I got my first Vietnam Tactical and saw the light. Since I buyed it this hawk follow me everywhere! This hawk truly have a soul! I recently received a Shoulder Rig from Survival Sheath system and was amaized how good this shoulder rig conceal my VT!
When in town I have my VT with me in my backpack. I've even using it to clean fishes on a fishing trip!
I love my hawk, it's my "silent partner" :D

diablero,

That would be great! I checked his site, though, and didn't see one on tomahawk fighting. Bowie fighting was there, and I'm interested in that too... you know, the 'hawk/bowie combo stuff. I guess I could have missed it. If you drop me an email, put something about Tomahawks in the subject. :)

By the way, has anyone... wait, I'll just make a new thread for that. Nevermind. haha

I'll post if you guys post! Maybe the several of us can revive this forum and attract some experts who don't often frequent it.

Sounds good to me, Skeletor. There use to be all kinds of guys who were on here talking about making 'hawks and what all goes into designing them and history concerning them and whatnot. I miss it. I don't really post on any of the other blade-related forums. I hit the Gadgets and Gear one, and occasionally the Survival ones from time to time, but this is where I am most comfortable.
