Why was the Duke 500 discontinued?

I always wonder why knife companies discontinue certain models. I know slow sales and changing trends dictate what sells. The Duke is one that puzzles me. It's based along the lines of the 110 and 112 but was discontinued, why? The 110 and 112 are so popular, the Duke seems to fit right there with them. Any thoughts on this?

I know deal-spotting is usually verboten in here, but FYI someone just put several of the 500 on ebay for $50 "buy it now" (not auction). They look like they are new. Just search for buck 500 (that's how I found it).
 
Cripes, this was from 2004? Well, I knew SOMEBODY was looking for one recently, and I saw the 12/28.

Whoever was ACTUALLY looking for it, there it is.

I saw the 500 on ebay, and I remembered someone complaining recently that they were discontinued, so I tried using the almighty search function to find the thread. I forget what search terms I used (just Buck and 500 I assume), and I swear this was one of the first few threads it found.

I just bought one after seeing your post. Thanks for the info, Carl. I've been searching for a mint 500 for several years. I'll post a report on the condition of the 500 after I receive it.

Funny you bring this thread back up. I saw all those 500's on ebay. They were recent production. I won an older 500 with micarta scales several days ago on ebay. I've got several 500's but really wanted an older one.

FYI.... the 500 or "Duke" is rumored to be Chuck Buck's favorite.

It's a a toss up for me between the 500 and 501 (maroon micarta/440c only please) as my favortie Buck.:thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup:
 
I was given a 500 Micarta as a gift around 1979+or- and I have never used it. Any ideas on what it would sell for? Thanks.
