Will BM ever

BC1 is very scratch resistant, but they might stick with BT2 for corrosion resistance on their tool steels. Just a guess.

I have one of the BM 705 forum knives in BC1. I comes with M2 steel. Isn't M2 steel considered a tool steel?

I also own a 705 with the BT2. I prefer the BC1. Maybe BM is waiting to see how the BC1 holds up, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they start using it on more of their knives in the future.

The materials for the forum knife were chosen by popular opinion of the participants, not by engineers weighing all the benefits and drawbacks. But since Benchmade is in business to make a profit they will probably give the people what they want, eventually.

I doubt it, because the BC1 requires more finishing to the blade prior to coating, or it'll look bad. Not to mention, as far as I know BC1 is proprietary to BodyCote (who also does BC1 and other coatings for other companies). They'd have to satin finish every blade, then send it to be coated, have them shipped back, then put them on a knife. Additional finishing, shipping both ways, the price of having them coated-those costs add up....higher price.
I'd like to see BC1 replace BT2, too, though.

If I were a Knife Company and using M2 Tool Steel and wanted Corrosion
I'd use the same process that Glock uses on their Handguns. The process is call Tennifer it's a saltbath treatment that will pass at least 100 hous Salt-Spray. Then for added scratch resistance deposit Boron Carbide now you have the ultimate Knife.

I wouldn't say so. Check this picture out:

The M2 Nimravus on the left originally had BT2 coating, and I've sent it to BodyCote in December to have it BC coated. It was blasted and then the coating was applied. As you can see it has a nice very dark gray/or black matte finish now. IMHO looks very nice :) The Benchmade 770 Osborne on the right is a factory blade, i.e. BC coating has been applied over the satin finish blade. Looks very different, right? Now I wouldn't say any of them looks bad, I like matte finish more, but someone may like another one. I'm sure tactical folks who are into the non-glare finishes would appreciate BC over blasted blade.
To complete the experiment I'm planing to have one of my 730 Ares HSSRs mirror polished and then BC coated. That should look different too. I'll post a pic of all 3 blades as soon as I'm done experimenting. By the way if anyone has a picture of a mirror polished and BC coated knife and can post it here it'd be nice :)

As of BC, I'm really pleased with its scratch resistance. Cant' say anything negative about its rust resistance, since I never had any rusting troubles even on my M2 Nimravus that had been completely stripped of BT2, let alone any coating on it.

Ok, wanna see what was going on under the BT2 of the 710HS I had coated?
This is after being blasted and coated.

It was under the BT2. It was blasted and coated with chromium and BC1.
If you will recall, I described the differences in the appearances of the BC1 over satin and blasted finishes to you on the BM forum, before you sent (actually, IIRC, the day you sent) your Nimravus.
I know what it looks like:p

Strange.

Sure. That's why I didn't post a link to that thread.

I thought BC was looking different than chromium + BC?

I don't know. I don't think it would look different, but...
Well, like I said I'm planing to BC a few more blades. Let's see.

That's a good way to find out for sure:D

I was thinking (shocking as that may seem). You know what would be kewl? A two-tone BC finish. Like maybe, blasted flats and a polished grind prior to coating.
One of these days, I'm going to send some more blades, too.

Better to see once, than hear thousand times, right ;)

Interesting. I'll try to recreate that in photoshop if I can... Let's see :)
