I just got Willie Hunt's custom insert system for 2 D cell Mag flashlights. This allows one to convert a 2 D cell Mag flaslight into one powered by eight AA cells (I used lithium batteries myself, tho alkaline may be used) which drive a Willie LVR, that in turn drives a 3.6 volt .8 watt high efficiency xenon bulb (supplied by Willie as part of the kit). I stumbled accross it HERE I was thinking about adding 2 Lithium D-cells and a Carley Xenon Star lamp for a 5 or 6 cell maglite, but this was a more practical and less expensive modification of the old Maglite. I'll let you know how it works.

Based on the link in my previous post, I thought I would get one conversion stick for $40, but Willie sent me two

This is a slick setup. The "conversion stick" consists of three discs joined by five brass rods or tubes. The top disc is circuit board material, there is a perforated center disc to separate the batteries and the bottom disc is actually a potted lightbulb voltage regulator. The 8AA batteries drive a 3.6 volt .8 watt high efficiency bulb. I don't know how it compares to a Carley Xenon Star or the like, but to my eyes it is definately brighter than the Krypton bulb from Campmor I had in my Maglite before conversion.

Here are the benefits as I see them:

1. Constant light output. I have not had a chance to confirm this yet.

2. The ability to use Lithium AA batteries, which are easier to get and cheaper than Lithium Ds and do not require dummy cells.

3. Brighter than the stock Maglite.

On the downside, the beam quality still sucks. I guess I've been spoiled by my LED lights and the SureFire M2 I got yesterday.
