has anyone made or seen a 100% wodden balisong? i think i wanna try to make one, just for fun... see if it's possible ;)
whatcha think?

A 100% wooden balisong would be extremely light and not very strong, I guess it goes with the pure gold balisong in the case. :)

hehe, i'm aware of that, i'd like to make one just for the fun of it. see if it would swing at all ;)
but a pure gold bali would probably be WAY more expensive than a pure wood... ;)

Go for it. Wood is a cheap and easily workable material that many knifemakers traditionally use to work out the mechanics of a knife. And bali's, with their intricate handle to blade relationship, is an excellent candidate for wooden modelling. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the older bali makers made a few wooden bali models in their time. It's translating the model to a real working prototype that gets a little tricky.

However, with wood, you can't use my method for the perfect tang pin :D .

Tony...I'm working on the outline of the novel as we type...

A Pop-Psychology thriller...

"Women are from Venus.., Tang Pins are from Tony"

I'm only asking for 2 conditions. 1) I get to kill all the villains with a bali. 2) Sniperboy does the cover art.

LOL... You share your hard thought out knowledge with people... and look where it gets you...:D

wow, that was a very interesting thread! i like that theory. and you're right, that probably would be pretty hard to do with wood ;)

but i don't think quality is my first mission on this balisong, though. i mean, how strong do you think a wood bali really is? :p

another thing too... would it be possible to make handles of i.e. plexi glass? if so, how do i cut it? laser? a normal saw?

Depends on the wood used... I'm sure you can get a pretty decent and durable letter opener using some of the hardwoods.

Plexiglass is fairly soft. Any bandsaw, jigsaw or hacksaw will do. Or you could try a Dremel tool with the side cutting bit. Or try acrylic, they come in bars that would make great handles.

birch, most likely. that's about as hard as it gets. leaf trees generally has pretty strong wood. but i think i'd go for birch.

ah, cool. i just thought it could look cool with see-through handles.
do you have any idea how much acrylic or plexi costs?

Why don't you try some G10? It's strong and easy to work with. Fred Perrin has made at least one balisong out of G10.
And you can get it pretty sharp too :D

Well, I'm not an expert by a long shot, but as far as I know, G10 is glassfibre with resin. It's used mainly as a handle material for knives though, but it's pretty tough.
