Having been lucky enough to get this knife, I will try to answer the question about its lineage. It is from the same series as the "Fancy Pre-Tacticals."

From what I understand, Ernie was making these knives in his pre-tactical days when he was influenced by Michael Walker. I like them in that to the best of my knowledge they are truly custom in their one of a kind quality. This one has wooden ( I think coco bollo) handles. The others are jigged bone and ivory micarta. They all have different pastel tinted titanium bolsters. I think that Ernie was giving his artistic side freedom to express itself here before the world discovered his awesome tactical vision.

Does anybody know any more about their history? Derek? Thanks.

Jackstraw,
I sorry that I can't offer any info on your newly acquired Emerson, but they sure are sweet. Thanks for sharing.

It looks as though it bridges the gap between the two groups to my eye. Your two fancy knives show a great deal of influence from Walker - the fluted bolsters, the slim handles, and the guarded liner locks. If you then look at the Viper 3 or 4, the handle has been given a swell to aid in control, the liner is opened up a bit, and the bolsters are all business. Your new knife is halfway there in each of these respects. I think that places it in the rare world of "important" pieces, ones that are not just rare (or in this case, unique)but that show the creative process of Ernie's work from fancy & functional to functional & fatal. The other ones are pleasant sidetracks in his story, but this one occupies a main way station.

Might one enquire as to its cost?
