My handle half died on me, some cracks and a piece missing !! How can I fix it ?? The piece that came loose is lost so I cant glue it back on !!

Would I be able to cut a corner of the karda off and shape it to fit then glue that on, if so how would I tackle this ??

Help appreciated !!

Weird, I was just chopping wood and the handle cracked and a piece jumped off. I oil my handle twice a week and it hasnt been dry - it's my favourite as well so I am fuming !!

yes i think if it split, and a piece jumped off, then the handle would need replaceing,as the next time it is used heavily it will probably fail totaly, with possable harmfull results.
THE PERFECT CHANCE TO MAKE A CUSTOM HANDLE.
bone , wood , brass , ceramic , casting plastic , the choice is endless. oh what fun:D :D :D
or you have the good ole hi guarantee. your choice.
i just love to get in an do things myself if at all pooable.
oops meant possable. but how apt, sometimes the things i do turn out like poo. heeeee he:)

Thanks Kendo, I like yourself like to try fix things myself !!

As far as the HI gaurantee goes, I know Uncle is as good as his word. The only thing is that by the time I ship the Knife back to Uncle and pay customs on the replacement I might as well of just bought a new one and fixed the one I have as best I can. Anyway it is my favourite so I am not about to send it off anyway. These things happen and we must just fix them. I cant imagine a nepali freeking about the situation - he would just get on with it and make do !! The blade is fine so thats all that really matters.

Thanks
Brendan

yep you sound like me a fixer upper, i to am in that sitution australia, big postage back to america.
perhaps if the splits not to big you could force in plenty of epoxy then clamp it in the vice with a cloth wrapped around to protect it a bit. then sand.
as for the piece that came out i wouldant ruin the karda.
i personaly prefer to use other materiels, like putting in an inlay,
sorta make it a feature.
even if you gotta carve the chunk out a bit more to make it look good.
say a yin+yang, or just a pretty piece of bone, mother of pearl ect.
i put a beut piece of amber inlayed into one handle. and a large 1/2 round piece on a scabbard. hope this helps the creative juices to start flowin. regards ken:D

Now that is a plan my friend. Amber, bone - I like it !!

Will it take to the wood. I have fixed the cracks so now I must fill gap. Yin Yan good too.

:D

and use good quality epoxy. leave to dry a minimum 24hrs.
even if you use 5min stuff. iuse the 5min a lot it is more convienient.
then sand and polish it down to your satisfaction, you will then have a truly personalised khuk,a work of art.
i luv amber cos it can be millions of years old, dont cost all that much, looks great with wood,an if you go and pick yor piece out,you can even get unusual bits with fossilised insect ect imbedded.
i also love bone, its cheap durable tough as steel, sands an carves well.looks great. regards ken:)

What about tigerseye - would that be hard to shape !!

The piece is triangular so do I sand the tigerseye/bone/amber into a triangular shape then glue and sand to finish or what !!

It has to be perfect !!

Make your inlay slightly larger than the hole, then draw around the inlay to get the shape of the area you must inlet to accept the inlay.
Does that make sense? After you enlarge the hole to match the inlay, the fit should be near perfect. The process isn't quite as easy as I make it sound, but if you're patient you'll be fine.

I've spent the afternoon trying to shape a piece of oak to fit the gap !!

Problems :

Chip is far too small to work !!
Dont have a carvers skill
Dont have tools
Nearly took 2 of my fingers off
Wood is different colour

Bottom line - it will look £%$" !

What if I fill the hole with wood filler or something this whole carving and shaping a piece to match is like trying to make a genetic match the earth !!

Any suggestions !!

if its only a small chip, you should simply drill a larger hole, not to deep say 1/4 inch, pop in a piece of whatever you fancy, glue it.
then sand down to suit profile. just like the kamis would do i suppose. . if you find it to daunting try out first on any rounded piece of scrap timber to similate the khuk handle.do several types of inlay,of different coulars and sizes ect.then pick what you like best, and do the same on the khuk. :D
I JUST FINISHED DOING ONE USED PLASTIC BEAD BLACK
bought from the wifes favourite shop the sewing centre, they sell all shapes an sizes ab colours. i used black. left the bead stickin out, then sanded it down, looks great like a piece of ebony inlay. beads are easy drill suitable size hole, select nice bead good size, glue in then sand . :)

how big is the triangle chip in your handle ?????

ie what size drill would cover it.

i did a box lid same way beads are great, emerald, ruby, black, white ect ect. hope this helps.

or just sand some dust of the handle add to some epoxy fill the hole and sand down.

I sent uncle a make do pic - you can see why its a bastard to fix !!

The worst spot to happen in !!

pis which I've resized and reworked to meet forum requirments.

yep thats a doozy of a spot.
i'd uese the sand dust of the handle and five min epoxy on that one.
use plenty of saw dust so as to make the epoxy thick so you can mold it like dough, and so it wont run, when nearly dry about 3-4 mins, just keep touchin it,give it a final smooth with fingers.
then wait about 2-3 hrs then sand, and finish.:) :)

Well, pink ivory handle with glittery, pink vinyl sheath has yet to be done. :D

I think a stacked-leather handle would be interesting, not to difficult, and absorb lots of chopping shock. (this is speculation. I've never done a stacked-leather handle, and have no idea how difficult it would be)
