With so many choices in cutlery today it seems that personal choice is the only answer to the right set of tools for camping , hiking or a long duration in the bush. Some people live by the "Nessmuk Trio" and have since changed it up with modern impliments. I like a good combo but I think it comes down to the envirenment you are going to traveling in.

What do you guys prefer a Trio or Combo? Lets see them.

Great looking pics, some cool steel.

On a non-dayhike outing I'll take three things: the Vic Farmer, a ~4" fixed blade, and a big boy of some kind.

The 4" blade is the Koster right now, but the Mora 510 gets used a lot there.

The big one is either a Fiskars hatchet or the kabar heavy bowie. I'm having a tough time deciding which of those two I like more.

Spooky tell me about your experience with the Fiskars. I have been thinking of it for a while. I just don't know how much I would use it.

It's by far one of my favorite and most used/useful tools in the woods, which makes it such a tough choice between it and the kabar bowie.

The Fiskars is a good chopper, made doubly so by some light reprofiling. The steel is easily made shaving sharp and maintains that edge well. The geometry is spot on, for me.

It's extremely lightweight for a tool in its class, and very well balanced. It doesn't wear you out too quickly with extended chopping, and choking up on the blade allows very comfortable controlled chopping, carving and slicing.

The last hatchet I had before this was a long time ago when I was young. It was a Colt synthetic handled hatchet (with the knife up the handle). It shattered on my first use. I only mention this to show the importance of an endorsement of the Fiskars, that handle just won't break.

If you frequent an area that is wooded, I think it's a great tool to have. And at ~$20, it's hard to resist.

Here is a trio from my last winter trip.

Fiskars 14" Hatchet
Case saddlehorn and trapper (one on the belt in a sheath and one in pocket)
Lately, I have been enjoying the Cold Steel Finn Bear or Roach Belly

Well this changes from time to time. But right now it's one of these two combos.

Reeves hatchet, Idaho Knife Works "Cliff Knife", Opinel saw, and Vic "Farmer".

Or it could be a GB Scandi Forest axe, Helle Jegermerster, and...... Vic "Farmer".

My Vic Farmer is almost always with me no matter what I'm doing or where/when I'm camping, hiking, or hunting. The rest can change though.

I also bought a Ontario 18" machete a while back after one of our long drawn out "Chopper vs. axe vs 4" blade discussions. Haven't really used it yet, but I'm sure I will.

Seems like the Fiskars and Farmer are a regular combo for lots of people.

Nice gear. How do you like the opinel saw compared to the large saw on an SAK?

Get the 18" Ontario convexed before you use it. It will be like a whole new tool.

You will see lots of:
Fiskars/Gerber hatchets and axes
Vic "Farmer"
Moras

with this lot.

I love the Opinel saw. Much more aggressive and way faster on small and large diameter limbs.

I'll try convexing my machete. I normally do on hard use wood working tools.

Thanks......

Well, for now the combo is always the same, my Ranger Bush Shiv and my SAK Outrider. The trio is normally made by the hatchet, but if I'm really feeling like a chopper or machete, I'll make the trio that way.

I'm just building up right now and it looks like I'm going in a different direction. I don't know if this is a good thing or not. Guess I'll find out after a few trips. I used to have a machete and hatchet but now I'm going smaller.

This pic is of my two newest pieces. A large nessmuk and a small hatchet from Gerry.

Some combination of the stuff in this pic is what I'll be using. In it is a cheap schrade (I've had it for a while) Gerber Multi-tool, benchmade griptillian(My EDC), the hatchet and nessmuk. Not pictured is the new pocket chainsaw that I got on ebay(hope it works).
