World War Three is Here

Well, The World War Three is here. Well, sort of
smile.gif
. First, here's the picture.

This particular one happens to be Berkley's Serial Number One. You'll notice that the only things that didn't make it off the drawing board and onto the knives was the lanyard hole. Of course, we may be able to drill it when we drill the pin holes. Second, there's a brass buttcap (loose for the time being) that I may decide to remove. The nub will have to be flattened - not a big deal.

Also, a report on the full tang: very substantial - about an eighth of an inch in width.

Any questions?

If I understand your question correctly, they are very consistent. That is, all of them seem to have been designed, as requested, with a very low tolerance - not much variation in size and thickness. The EdgeWorks boys are going to be glad to hear it!

Gosh, there's so much I have to post as a result of this last shipment, I keep forgetting things . . . Lalit sent 40 of the WWIIIs in - all numbered. So I'll have plenty to go around, and there are still few enough of them that they'll be "limited edition."

With that, here's the list again:

1. Berkeley
2. Bandoman
3. Blackdog
4. C. Cleve
5. M. Travis
6. Marcus
7. J. Mahler
8. Ugly Jim

Yeah, that was what I was wondering. Being consistant will greatly aid the sheath and handle makers.
I am glad to hear that you got several extras, as I think this will be a popular model once word gets out. I can't wait to see a finished knife. It should look good with my AR-15.

I picture mine with my AK-47. Well, maybe with the Mossberg 500 Ghost Ring. Then again, it sure wouldn't look bad with the 1911-A1 or the Marlin 45-70.

Sometimes life is GOOD.

Good - because they come with an AR15 magazine - Just kidding! Nah, seriously, it actually comes with an AK mag - NOT!

Seriously, I do have a question (one that I'll post elsewhere on the forum also) - Peter, my friend who volunteered to do the handles - just closed shop for personal reasons, and has asked to back out of the project. That means the job is open for a competent knife/handle maker who wants to devote the time to this project. Does anybody know of any potential talent?

Finding someone good won't be too hard - I thought that this would be the first place to ask. Finding an artist who's willing to turn out 40 handles on blades that he/she didn't make - that's the tricky part.

I love the polish on that blade

How much were you asking for those anyway? You were not going to blue that beautiful blade were you? It would be a crime.

Craig,
Congrats on getting your own forum at last!

And Blackdog, I don't envy you the new job, but we're all glad you're there.
The WWIII looks excellent-the kamis seem to have done a remarkable job in executing the design. As for me, I'd be happy to keep the brass buttplate if possible, but I realize that the final decision will be up to whoever makes the handles. Keep us posted on progress, and I hope Santa will be able to pick mine up before Christmas.

Shiroikuma: Yes, alas, the blade will be blued. But the polish isn't much different than on our other blades. You may have seen or heard about our earlier blades - they weren't as highly finished as the ones we offer now.

Berkley: If I have my drothers, Santa will be stopping at your house a bit early. As for the buttplate, you're right - we'll leave it up to the handle-maker.

Woo Hoo a Beautiful blade that's for sure!!

Glad to see a seperate Gurkha House forum now, only problem is it's on the bottom of the list and I just hate scrolling down

It looks beautiful. The reason we asked for no butt caps though, is so we could have a protruding butt tang to hammer with.

Did they remember to harden the tang butt?

Yeah - hopefully, we'll be able to rise in the ranks as we build more of a readership. Until then, hey - we're the new kid on the block!

My personal opinion is that to stick to the original WWIII concept it needs the lanyard hole and the brass buttcap has to go. I make some knives myself and from my experience it will actually be easier to put handles on the knives without it. If the tang is long enough it should also extend beyond the grip scales slightly on the bottom, again *if* you want to stick to the original concept. The lanyard hole shouldn`t be any problem since whoever puts the grip scales on has to drill holes for the grip pins anyway. I`m not trying to be difficult,I`d just hate to see it turn into basically a small Panawal with a blued blade. The beauty of the concept is in the details. Craig,if you need someone to do the handles why not post it o the bladesmith/shop forum? If there isn`t someone there who`s interestet they should be able to direct you to someone who is. BTW the blades look great, they`re gonna be gorgeous blued!

I definatly want the lanyard hole. I don't really want the brass butt cap, but I wouldn't remove it, if it came with it.

I too think we should keep to the original, minimalist design. Otherwise it would be too close to the many other khukuri styles availible. If you buy any khukuri, it will have a buttcap, Why buy the WWIII?

I've always been a fan of Rob Simonich's simple yet elegant designs. This one is his SRTK. For the uninitiated, a lot of us had something like this in mind for the handle. Notice the lanyard hole in the tang.

<img src = "http://www.simonichknives.com/srtk.jpg">

If the WWIII is a success, I think Craig will do more micarta handled khukuris in the future. Just less worries about it cracking.

I totally agree about the lanyard hole and the removal of the brass buttcap.

Tallwinged: That picture you posted is the best representation of what I too imagined. Glad to see we are all on the same sheet of music here. I am going to be talking to a prospective handle maker tomorrow night, so I'll let you all know how the discussion turns out. And the tang is definitely long enough to let it extend a bit.

Frankly, I think the buttcap got shipped with the WWIIIs for good measure. The best thing about it is that they can come off with little effort.

More later!
