Would you recommend Northwoods?

Hi All,
I'm thinking about picking up a knife from Northwoods, and in doing a seach have seen some positive's and negatives here on the forum. They're not the cheapest knives out there so just wanted some opinions from those that own/have owned one. What are your opinions? Would you buy another? Thanks.

Nathan

i was just looking at one of their stockman yesterday so i'm interested in this as well.

i thought i read on here somewhere they were made by one of the major manufactures but i can't remember which one. Maybe Queen? They seem to have a higher price point.

I believe you're correct, they're made by Queen and they do have a higher price point. I've heard more than one person talk about the fact that they were not happy with a forum knife that was done, so I wanted to see if maybe it was just a shoddy run or if they generally have quality control issues.

I've had two. The first one was absolutly horrible. The second was good. To me, its hit or miss. No in between.

I have a large stockman that I picked up at their shop. Seems like a nice knife to me. Also I would guess Queen is the manufaqcturer as well. That is just a guess though.

The Forum 08 knife was a small Stockman in stag. 3 & five eighths"

The other day I got a Queen Cutlery No.2 Serp Jack, it appears to use the same frame but has only 2 blades instead of three. The Queen is much better finished all round, it cost a good deal less as well.

You're correct..Queen supplies the knife frames to Northwoods to finish as they want..handle material etc......And I do own a number of Northwoods knives all are very nice.
Has anyone else seen the new Stockman's from them in Mastadon Ivory..quite the lookers

For me it would depend on what you want in the knife. They do have some nice stag & if you get to see the specific knife before buying.
But if it's a user then why pay more? Just get 1 straight from Queen.

The Northwoods forum knife I received was really nice. I'm very impressed with their Scagel folders too.

I love the look of S&M's but dont understand why they use 420 steel on most of their knives. The one Queen I've purchased was pretty nice but the blade was dull and that D2 was a pain to sharpen without diamond rods. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

I agree with Peregrin, I too have the Northwoods forum knife, and a couple of Northwoods Scagel folders. All are really nice knives.

If you like Queen, getting a diamond plate would be almost essential.

God Bless

I bought a Northwoods Scagel which had the most bent blade I've ever seen on a knife.

KnivesShipFree gave me a replacement right away, but it sure doesn't say much for Northwoods' quality control!

The replacement was fine, but neither knife came with a working edge.

Northwoods Knives are Queens with an extra touch.

On the Stag, Ol Dave chooses and puts it on himself. It is some of the very best I have seen.

The Fit and Finish on the knives is equal to Queen S&M because that is the finish he requests. I really like them.

All that being said....They are a dressed up Queen. But if you like good stag, they are the place to go.

They are totally hit and miss. I have a perfect tiny toothpick in stag. I have a Large Toothpick in bone with warped blade and split scale. My forum knife was no great knife either. So, in person, go for it; online, forget it.

I've also seen a GEC liner lock that looks exactly like the knife in your picture. The liner lock pressures the blade against the opposite liner. An otherwise nice looking knife with stag scales, though, limited production and all.

According to a KnifeWorld article and somethings said by the owner on another forum, Nortwhoods production does not equal Queen production. Each knife is a separate project with the work done by a combination of in-house manufacture, subcontractors and vendors. Sometimes they use Queen for parts and some assembly, sometimes they use Queen parts and do all work in-house, sometimes a mix of different companies. Final work and finish is by Northwoods.
