So I pop open the Bass Pro sale flyer to check out the sale shotguns for turkey season. Almost every single one had a thumbhole stock or a pistol grip.

Do these things really afford that much better control? I've killed turkeys with three different regular stock 870s and never felt like the gun was mis-aimed or out of control.

Best thing since sliced bread or just a gimmick?

gimmick, but keep in mind i'm an old guy. I also think the 3 1/2" 12 gauge for turkeys is a gimmick also.

I think the pistol grip stocks on turkey shotguns are mostly an attempt by firearm manufacturers to lessen the gap between tactical/"assault" shotguns and hunting shotguns, not that there's anything wrong with that.

I vote gimmick.

Amen. I've put exactly one 3.5" shell down barrel while patterning. The small amount of added distance ain't worth the recoil.

I do like the Remington Hevi-Shot, albeit in a #5 3" load.

I absolutely LOVE thumbhole stocks for target/rifle shooting. But for hunting with a shotgun, I can't see the benefit. Really, I just don't.

How the heck did I double tap with another post in the middle?

I think there are elves in the BFC server.

Wow, just saw the pictures for the first time. It looks WRONG to see the pistol grip and thumbhole. just WRONG.

Lol, one flaw in the Mossberg design is that when applying a thumbhole or pistol grip stock to a Mossberg, it significantly moves your hand away from the safety. I'd say it is gimmick, but hey they make no qualms about advertising it as such. You can have a Tactical Turkey for $429

100 % pure gimmick !!! Police who are knowledgeble won't use pistol grip stocks .Thumbholes "might " be ok for rifle target shooting assuming that the thumbhole fits your hand !!! They have no place on a shotgun. I don't have dedicated shotguns , they have to do multiple duty -squirrel, rabbits, geese etc and sporting clays ,skeet .Thumbhole or pistol grip would be a handicap !h

Mossberg 835 Tactical Turkey shotgun. Seriously, WTF does that even mean. They forgot to put in the word extreme, with just an X.

What a load of marketing BS.

Maybe if the Divisions of Wildlife and Natural Resources start arming turkeys with IEDs and small arms, then we'll need a Tactical Turkey Shotgun. Until then...

... these regular, old 870s worked just fine.

I am certain that not only are those turkeys going to be pi$$ed that they didn't get shot with a tactical shotgun but that they also will not taste nearly as good. I am certain all the other turkeys are mocking them right now. :D Who knows, since they weren't shot with a tactical shotgun they may not actually be dead.

You mean I BBQ'ed them alive???

The horror. :D

My shotgun has a normal grip, but I actually prefer pistol / vertical grips on firearms. They are just more comfortable. Never liked thumbholes much.

The Benelli M-1 is very comfortable and quick pointing with the vertical grip, but the armorer here showed me an 870 with one and it's just too damn hard and beats up the web of your hand. Benelli has a nicely cushioned grip. I've shot skeet with it and have had no issues. Also, with a simple Vickers sling it is easy to keep relaxed and ready at the same time. Thumbholes, in my opinion, should be left for target/recreational shooting only.

Dave

Anyone ever try shooting trap with them? I primarily hunt pheasant and grouse (not many wild turkeys on the plains) and I don't think they would help for shooting birds on the fly. Although I could be wrong, I've never tried.

I once saw a guy on a hunting show shooting dove with a PG shotgun.

The PG may provide a little more ergonomics when scrunched down against a tree, but I'd want the Remington safety and not the Mossberg in that case.

I personally prefer a pistol grip but that's exactly what it is personal preference. Is it neccesarily better or more accurate? Not really. For years we've had regular old stocks and the guys taking 870s into combat (very popular with some SOF types in VN for point) didn't whine about not having a "tactical" stock.
I will say that I'd rather be able to play off my home defense weapon as a turkey gun than be incriminated.

Guys, I think your kind of missing the point here. These are designed to be designated turkey hunting guns. They are meant to be aimed like a rifle not swung like you do when wing shooting. The same thing can be said about tactical shotguns. Are they good for wing-shooting? I don't know, as I've never tried to shoot birds with my tricked out tactical shotgun. I have it for home defense and as a backup gun when I guide pig hunts and I aim it when using it in these roles. Is it a gimmick ? Maybe so, but the gun companies are in the business of selling guns and adding new features is the easiest way to get people to buy more products. If you already have a regular shotgun why would you buy another one just like it? It's kind of like knives and how many of those do you have? I bet you could get by with only one or two, but I'm willing to bet that if your on this forum you have way more than that. Variety is the spice of life they say, so why knock it if you haven't tried it. I like mine quite a bit and I find that it helps to handle the recoil of full-power slug and buckshot loads as it pushes straight back into my shoulder with less muzzle rise than a normal butt-stock. Just my 2 cents worth.
