i'm thinking of buying a xd sub-com 40. i like the feel and looks but have never shot one. it will be used for ccw. any insight would be welcome. thanks!

i have shot the small 9MM but not the .40, i liked the 9MM a lot though and i thought it was similar to a glock FWIW, i havent heard anything but good about all the XD's..........

I have shot both and personally would prefer the 9mm over the 40. Ammo tends to be cheaper, the 9mm is faster from shot to shot, and with good ammo the difference in stopping power is minuscule at best.

I agree, plus most people seem to shoot the 9mm better. I think the issue with the 40's recoil is that it's very fast compared to even a .45 & I've seen people's follow-up shots to "usually" be off compared to the same people shooting 9's or even 45's.

Ammo is going to go up, especially with the micro serial # stamping to suposed to become mandatory.

As an aside on the XD's reliability. While it seems to be a very good pistol, there have been some desert Dept's that went to the XD's & then switched back to Glocks. FWIW, they cited reliability issues as the reason for changing. Again, I found the XD to be a fine pistol, but have only fired them, not owned any.

with good ammo the difference between the 9MM and .40 (or even the .45) is negligible with good modern ammo like the speer gold dot/w-w ranger and remington golden sabre, and the .40 is a little more difficult to shoot well due to the increased recoil, if it was me i would probably go with the 9mm too.

i hardly ever carry a .40 anymore, the 9MM has less recoil and usually a few more rounds, if i dont feel like the 9MM is good enough (which rarely happens) i would rather have a .45ACP anyway than the .40.

to be honest i carry 357SIG a lot more than .40 too, the main con to the SIG round especially outta a short bbl pistol is its LOUD i hope if i ever need mine i have a moment or 2 to don my hearing protection lol.

but, point being, unless ya are handicapped by no access to good ammo, or ya are stuck with ball, the 9MM will work just fine for most stuff, and if that was the case i would again prefer the .45ACP to the .40.

I have the older model XD-9 Subcompact (not the XD-M or whatever the current one is) and it's a great gun. I've fired probably 1000 or more rounds through mine in the past year, all types of ammo, and I had one round fail to fire and that was a bum bullet, not the gun's fault. I would recommend you buy a Pearce grip extension for the 10rd mag, too. The difference in comfort with the extension for your pinky versus the flat stock mag bottom is amazing.

I guess the only issue I've had with my gun is I have noticed that the rear sight has shifted a little to the left and needs to be knocked back to center. Should take about five seconds next time I go to the range.

just not a 9mm fan. wouldn't want to get shot buy one, but i'm also looking for something light to carry on the trail with fire power. a 9mm would only piss alot of critters off. have also looked into the glock 30 45acp. it's just not quite as compact as the xd. however, the glock does weigh a little less. the xd is american made so that has appeal for me. taurus makes a sub-com in 45 but then again it's made in brazil. come on springfield where's the xd sub-com 45?

The xd is made in Croatia. Nothing wrong with that, and I have a xd9sc. I really don't think the whole 9 vs 40 argument works well against critters. Humans maybe, but if you encounter a critter that won't stop after 2 or 3 rounds of 9mm, you'd better have a New York reload of 454 Casull or bigger!

The "old" arguments against the XD don't hold up very well anymore, and if the Subcompact you are looking at buying is a new model (better finish) I'd say go for it!

My handgun arsenal ranges from 22s to a pair of BFR 45-70 revolvers. A neat pistol I recently acquired is the Polish P64. This is (or was) their version of the Makarov in caliber 9x18. The P64 is slightly smaller than a Mak and is a very nicely finished military/police pistol. I'm a detective with my local sheriff's dept and my partner and I took our P64s out to the desert last weekend to try them out using Hungarian Makarov Plus P ammo. Man! They shot like a dream. Smooth, accurate, great single action trigger pull, and no malfunctions. A lot of power too. My partner now carries his off duty and I'm considering doing the same. Reason? If I have to use my concealed weapon, I know I won't see it again for one to two years, and maybe never, because it will be held as evidence. So, I would rather say bye-bye to the P64 at less than $200 bucks than my Kahr PM40 ($580 dealer), Taurus PT 1911($553 dealer), Colt Gold Cup ($1500), or several other of my much more valuable guns. When I was in uniform, I carried a S&W 41 mag with six inch barrel, the one and only deputy to qualify with a revolver, and I also carried this big boy concealed in the winter time. I always felt very comfortable and secure with the 41 on me. It can reach out and touch someone a long ways off if necessary. I shot five elk with it, all one shot kills, so I'm sure it would, to say the least, ruin a human's day. I have to chuckle thinking about using only one gun for duty, big game hunting, and wintertime concealed carry.

xd shooter, i did not realize the xd was made in croatia. i've handeled one many times, just always assumed it was made in america.
old cw4, nice job with the elk and handgun! i have a 454 casull super redhawk in 71/2". never shot an elk with it though.
maybe i'll just go with the 45 taurus and save a few bucks since i have a 1911 and the 45's would be interchangable ammo. tha way i wan't have to buy any 40 cal. dies.
the whole not made in america xd thing kind of bum's me out. i know the taurus is made in brazil, both 40 or 45 both made somewhere else. might as well stick with the 45.
damn it!

The actual gun was developed for the Croatian army by IM Metal and called the HS2000. SA is the only importer and although they're marked with SA and USA markings, it's still made in Croatia.

thanks! always interstiing. learn something new everyday! will have to look more into the history of the firearm. still dosen't change the fact that it's not a 45!!!
oh' well.

I'm carrying an XD 45 right now. Great pistol. No issues at all.

I've had my XD45 for a little over a year now. Now problems at all and a good pistol.
