Yellowhorse on ebay

Tulsamal - Actually, it's a "Hunter" model. There were fewer than 200 made with more than 50 going overseas.

I'm certainly not going to argue with you Sal. I've never seen one before. I was just saying how it was labeled on ebay. I know I've heard people here talk about the Yellowhorse knife (knives?) as the rarest and most desirable. The seller has it listed as: "This rare Yellowhorse Spyderco 'Co-Pilot' is one of the hardest to find models! Less than 100 of these beautiful knives were produced! This one is no. 76!"

So are you saying it is really a Yellowhorse Hunter (instead of Co-Pilot)? I can see it does have Dave Yellowhorse engraved into the steel. It is really pretty. Wonder what his reserve is?

It is definitley a Hunter model not a copilot. The seller obviously is not very knowledgable or he is trying to be slick. Either way, I'd be careful.

Sal, Is that 200 of each model?
I sent a email to the seller last night and told him that it was indeed a Hunter and even sent him a link to the Spyderco forum to check his facts on the number produced. He sent me a e mail back questioning my knowledge. All I can say is BEWARE.

Bobby - As I remember, we made about 175 of each (Police, Hunter & CoPilot). They were all numbered. Then David Yellowhorse signed an exlusive contract with Buck and told us he couldn't make any more. that's when we began working with Bill at Sante Fe Stoneworks.

Wow! That knife went to $284.64 and yet still didn't make the "reserve." I love it when people put up an item on ebay, let bidding start really low, and then set a reserve so high that it's nearly certain to not be met.

I emailed this seller and sent him pictures of all the Yellowhorse/Spydercos. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but wasn`t really that knowledgable about Spyderco products. He told me the person who sold the knife to him told him that it was the CoPilot and he had no reason to question it. Evidently, the guy had a few other Yellowhorse knives to sell, but died before the eBay guy could get any more. So I didn`t get the feeling that this guy was sleazy, just misinformed.

Truthfully, I`ve never seen the Yellowhorse Hunter before. Is it possible that they are rare in the USA?

I guess I've posted this all over this forum, but you have no idea what it feels like to accidentally fall into a group of people who actually know what they're talking about.

I used to sell Spyderco knives years ago. I got started when I kept buying large numbers of knives from Steve Garten to take back to my PD. All these knives had been paid for by other officers.

In any event, I bought from Steve what has been identified to me as a prototype of a Yellowhorse police model. It has a serrated blade, and, of course, is only decorated on one side.

Is there anyone around who can tell me about this knife? I'd love to learn more. I also am apparently very lucky, as I have my old "P. I. G." folder. It is battle scarred and has a slightly bent tip, but it saw me through a career in policing in Central California. It is the first Spyderco knife I ever owned, and I'm really glad I kept it. I still carry it from time to time. It's my buddy.
