Well, what do you think? I'm told that 14-4CrMo is a lot closer to 440A than 154CM. I'm no alloy expert. A search on the forum didn't turn up the answer. So, I thought I'd ask the experts here.

Thanks.

Chuck, the Crucible Orange book shows a 414 Modified Stainless, intended for holding blocks and backing plates, containing:

.03% Carbon
12.5% Chromium
2.75% Nickel
.30% Molybdenum
.12% Sulfer

If this is what you have, its' not a blade making steel, 440A is used some mostly in commercial cutlery.

440A contains .75% Carbon, 18.0% Chromium.

154CM contains 2.15% Carbon, 17.0% Chromium.

Closer to 440A, sort of, but not very close.

Hi. Not an expert either, but I think 154CM is usually included in the 14Cr-4Mo class.

Crucible states a typical analysis of:

C 1.05%
Mn 0.50%
Si 0.30%
Cr 14.00%
Mo 4.00%

In my copy of the book, anyway. And 440A is very different, with usually less than 1.00% Molybdenum. Does this help?
