A friend is looking at the following fixed blades to throw in his rescue bag for work. This would be a general use fixed blade for rescue work, or as a tool. You impute on the following knives or other suggestions would be appreciated.
* Bechmade Nimravus
* Camillus CQB - series
* Emerson Police
* Fallkniven S-1
* Buck Strider 888 fixed blade

Thanks

I like the Fallkniven S-1 the best out of the knives that you named, but I like the Fallkniven A-1 even better. I have a Nimravus in M-2, but the Fallknivens have superior handles in my opinion. If price is a big consideration, look at the Cold Steel SRK and Master Hunter in Carbon V.

I made my soon to be bro-in-law a fixed blade for SAR work that he does. 4.5"ish blade, micarta handle. He said it is good, but heavy. Ask your friend if he's gonna carry the blade a lot, and find out what is tastes are as to weight. If your friend doesn't mind carrying more weight, just about any blade on your list is fine! If he wants to keep the weight down, I bet the Nimravus or small CQB would be best.

Of the knives you listed, I'd be real tempted to get the Buck Strider fixed blade. Of course, that is partly because the knife I made Darryl kinda looks like the Strider! I didn't even know about Strider Knives then really. I'm still trying to figure out who copied who! :) :cool: :D

What kind of rescue work? Cold Steel's tanto has been praised by firemen who used it to cut through walls and to pry open doors. Others in that category might include the Becker Campanion (great for dismantling Buicks or cutting through sheet metal), CS's SRK, or several of the Buck utility fixed blades.

To answer the question as to what kind of "rescue" work it is going to be for a smaller law enforcemnt agency. This would consist of general search and rescue operations, to using the knife as a pry tool down to opening packages or boxes ect.... I know that even though it will mainly be in a duffle bag, he would like it to be small enough that it could be worn comfortably on a BDU uniform.

He is leaning towards the Benchmade, I suggested the S-1 or the Buck Strider.

Most people who know me aren't going to believe this, but I'd take the Camillus CQB knives off your list (although the CQB-1 and CQB-2 ARE two of MY favorite knives), as they are more of a "fighting" knife, and not thick enough to be used as a prybar.

You might want to take a look at either the Fallkniven A1, or S1. For around $50, there is the excellent Buck Nighthawk to take a look at.

I like the Benchmade with M2 steel. The only down side is the sheath, lots of folks don't like them , but it works just fine for me. I've kept one of these knifes on my boat for the last 2-years including winter storage with no signs of rust. IMHO a great product for the price.

With the exception of the Buck, it's a dead heat. I might buy the Camillus first, but the others would follow very shortly thereafter. I have not yet held the Buck, so I cannot comment, but the New CQB is a beauty......Ira;)

10-4 on what Dann said! Out of your list I'm real fond of the S-1, it's a fine working blade. Murray at ProEdge has been using one to puncture the roofs of cars with only scratches to the (black) blade coating. Haven't seen the Buck/Strider yet.
Stay Safe,

I am a medic and don't really need a fixed blade on the job, but if I did, the Buck/Strider solution would be my pick. I think it's the best value in a production fixed blade. I carry a benchmade rescue hook,Emerson P-SARK, emerson white water rescue(LaGriffe), Buck/Strider 880SP,And I keep a cold steel SRK in my truck as well as the B/S solution in a jump bag.I have a Emerson CQC7 that I used to cut through the roof of a car to gain access to a patient,ruined the knife but saved the patient. Yea that's alot of knives, but I did'nt get the nickname "jimmy the blade" for nothing. It all boils down to what YOU like and need. Hope that helps.:D

Ok, the choices have been limited down to the Benchmade Nimvarus, the Buck Strider...and not totally ruling out the Camillus CQB.

He doesn't like the look of the Falkniven. So out of the three above mentioned knives, which ones have you handled and tell us why you liked or disliked them.

Thanks again:)

Wow, medic467, that is quite a story! Ruined a CQC7 cutting through a car roof? Thats HARDCORE knife use! Its great how you saved the patient.
Cliff Stamp- I think you have some competition!
