Mother of pearl? I will soon be in the position to import a fair amount of MOP and wanted to get all the input I possibly can. Would appreciate any thoughts about this at all. Web pages and/or tips on how best to work MOP, sizes you may have been able to obtain in the past, prices you paid, etc. Whatever info or even opinions you have to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, LP

MOP is probably the most beautiful material in the world. Very dangerous to work, it is best worked wet on lapidary equipment. Really good MOP is getting difficult to find, especially in large pieces.

With high silica content it is brittle and subject to cracking. Great for jewelry but I'm not sure about knives except for perhaps handle accents.

Beautiful stuff but relegated to Gents folders due to its brittle nature. Look out for worm holes in it when you get it.

I had an old friend who was a much older guy who had one of the most elaborate collections of straight razors. He had several of them that had "Mother Of Pearl" handles. They were gorgeous!!! . I have seen probably 3 knife handles with this most wonderfully adorning material and needless to say they were quite pricey. Yeah if you see a knife with MOP and it has a bargain basement price I can assure you it must be a fake. This guy who had the straight razor collection told me that a couple of his with the MOP handles were worth anywhere from $300 to $500. I wish I knew more about the different qualities and how to tell whether or not the MOP is authentic or not. Great Thread!!;)
