What do you do to keep your vehicle from being stolen? Alarm? Steering wheel lock? Brake lock? VIN etched on windows?

-Greg

Alarm, Steering wheel lock, windows etched, security code on on-board computer of my BMW 530i. This really only deters amateurs. The pros will get your car if they really want it. The above are all requirements here for insurance purposes.

I had contemplated the installation of a bouncing-betty anti-personnel mine in the center console of the car.

Not only did I find that there were illegalities involved, but I pictured a day that I jump in the car or do some other dumb thing without disarming it. That would hurt... :grumpy:

Lock doors, alarm, don't have anything in the car that isn't covered under some sort of insurance and can't be easily replaced. I tend not to drive the "new and exciting" cars, but ones that are 7-8 years or so old, so there's also an "older car" stealth factor invovled.

Buy an 15 year-old beater Ford pickup, and I'll bet you can leave it unlocked with a Holland and Holland behind the seat with no problems.

Don, some toe-poppers on the brake, accelerator and clutch would be a nice touch, too. :D

I drive a 1994 Ford Tempo. Take it if you want it...I have good insurance.:D.

Glockman's on the right track...drive older used cars.

First of all if it's to damn fancy then some one else will
for sure want it or if you leave valubles showing they will
want them too. Next don't lock the car. Really.. Locks only
keep honest folk's out and they aren't into stealing you stuff.
The crooks are, so they know how to get in no matter what.

Then carry enough insurance.Unless you are very rich.
As to slowing down a crook from taking your car ....not.
he'll tear it up trying then what have you accomplished
besides wrecking your own car.

On a similar note, after having some stuff stolen out of my car I once looked into finding a way to deploy the airbags if somebody broke into the car. I also wanted to be able to do it remotely with the keyless entry fob.:D

Call me crazy, but I just love the idea of some dude leaning in to get my stereo and getting whomped into the back seat by the "Supplemental Inflatable Restraint".

Other than that I don't do much. If they want it they will get it, and if it's lock you will have to get the glass replaced if and when you find it.

I used to know a guy who was a semi-reformed car radio thief who told me he was glad when he saw a "Protected by Car Alarm" sticker on the vehicle. In his words "Sheeeeit, I'd steal that thing too."

My car is used, and the previous owner had an alarm installed, so I use it. I also use the Club, but none of it will really keep a determined theif out.

I think the best theft protection measure is to park in a safe place.

I just take the keys into the house. From there you have to get past my two very viscious Golden Retrievers....

my jeep has the century key system, which uses a little transmitter in the key to verify that its actually your key starting the engine, and if its not the engine will shut off.

not that anybody would want to steal it anyway, its covered in dirt, drives like crap, and gets single digit gas mileage!

I drive a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Limited and it came with LoJack with the vehicle disabler. Someone successfully entered the vehicle a few weeks ago but was unable to start it by even hotwiring it. They did, however, damage the power window motor and track. $105 and it was as good as new.

I just lock the steering wheel and the door.

A little OT: Does anyone use one of these car safes ? - A little box you can screw under the seat to store money etc. ?

For my Kawasaki ZX-12R...

Kryptonite Fagedaboudit 6' chain & disc lock,
Progressive Suspension Lever Lock
Kryptonite NY Disc Lock

No problemo, I lock the door - and drive a 1989 Opel Vectra 1,6 with several rust spots and 240.000 km. on the clock! If anyone steals it, they are either blind, very desperate or both!:D

Nothing fancy on my cars.

Factory alarm, the Club and locked doors.

I'm sure I can do better but then again I never go into high risk areas.

I knew a guy who was part of a custom truck club. He had a souped up S10 with about $10,000 under the hood. His alarm ran a hi voltage across the body making it unpleasent to break into. Anyone else hear of these?

Stickdeath systems rule!!! :D Haven't heard of the hi-voltage setup, but I've read about placing a siren in the passenger compartment that wails so loudly that it hurts to be inside.
