I'd just like to once again thank Sal and the crew at Spyderco for being a fantastic company and taking the time to produce limited runs of exotic versions of their knives for us knife nuts to play with. :) I just got my Calypso Jr with the ZDP steel and I have been very impressed. This knife must be one of the sharpest, if not the sharpest, knife I have ever seen out of the box. After a few light strokes on my strop block this knife would readily grab and cut my thin and whispy arm hair above skin level! A challenge for even a straight razor! :) This knife is a slicing machine and will hopefully hold it's razor edge for a long time.

Here's a question for Sal if you have a chance to respond. I don't know if this has been asked before or answered before, but how does Spyderco go about sharpening their knives at the factory? If this information can be diclosed, I'd be curious to know if it's all done with a belt sander, what grit is used to finish, etc.

Congratulations on you new toy (or should I say tool)! I am reluctant to get the ZDP one because of it’s handle color, and I have had my VG-10 version for over four years and it woks pretty well for me, can’t justify to get another one; plus I am not very good at sharpening, I couldn’t even reproduce the factory edge, not even close. I too would like to know how spydco sharpen their knives.

I have the grey handled VG-10 version as well. The handle color on the ZDP doesn't bother me. It might if it was a bright flourescent color, but it's a nice subtle burgendy.

I can put on a better than factory edge, but I mostly curious about what grit value they finish at. Say 400? 800? 1000? higher?

I've seen a response from Sal on one of the forums that says they use a belt sander/grinder with a "fairly course grit."

I think the specifics are a trade secret, but I've heard the final edge is done by hand with a sander. Not 100% sure though.
