Hey guys, I was just thinking about a thread I started a few months ago asking for a ZT made folding bowie with high end materials and high tech machining. It then popped into my head, why can't they just use the existing 0560 platform and throw the bowie and hellfire tanto blades in there!? Anyways, I just wanted to feel out the support or lack thereof for something like this, either a limited run or even a regular production version, but with some new handle scale color and machining pattern.

Here are some pics for reference of the real stuff:

I like it. I'm sure if you throw enough money at a skilled craftsman, they can do that mod for you and I think the end result would look cool as hell. Would be interesting to get some quotes on cost though. Just thought about this as well; any legal infringements for that kind of mod? Don't know, not a lawyer...

If you modify it for yourself, it should be alright. (Don't expect any warranty after modification though.)

If you get a bunch of them and modify them and start selling them that may not be a good idea.

That would require ZT to make a knife blade that was not shaped like a spade/brick/sunfish. What you are asking for is pretty much the same as asking spyderco to make a knife without a hole in the blade.

I think you'd be able to sell them as long as you made it clear that it was modified and based on an 0560 and didn't claim the entire design. That is based on "first sale doctrine" and that all kind of went to crap after Omega watches sued Costco... so what a judge would rule if it ever went to court is kind of up in the air as far as I know. But I'm not a lawyer. I just play one on the internet :) I have worked in a legal office, thought mostly doing the math for partitioning up oil and gas probate, and have taken LSAT prep exams.

I don't like the bowie but have always liked the hellfire tanto. I don't think I'd have much use for it though. But I hardly use my knives anyway! :) I really would love a Spanto grind though as it looks neat as well as being practical. I guess I'm very much a pragmatist in that sense *shrug* I think it would be nice to see more blade styles though. I don't know how practical that would be for production but Kershaw seems quite good at inventing the technology when they need it. The Hinderer lines seem to be incredible sellers and I think it would be a welcome way to expand their offerings in that line. But I only like to pretend I know everything like I pretend I'm a lawyer... I for one would welcome some different blade styles.

Um...what?

The ZT 0700, 0750, 0780, 0550/1, 0560/1, 0150, 0160, 0170, and the ZT-9.

Have to say I actually prefer the krein bowie over the hinderer bowie. The hinderer one looks more like it has more of a scimitar-esque look. Nothing against hinderer I still want an xm-24 (does he still make these?) That and the hellfire grind look nice on the 560/61

That bowie krein ground knife that's the top 561, does it have some kind of blueing or coating? Just makes it look really sharp. (No pun intended):)

I believe he does an acid wash. There are more pictures of his work over at USN. He does a nice looking 0300 too.
