ZT 0560 Blade Stop Pin and Kershaw/ZT CS Question.

Well I recently read a thread about a guy that has some rattling in his ZT 0560. This made me curious, so I gave my 0560 a light shake in the open position and it did indeed rattle. I closed it and gave it a light shake, no rattle.
I was confused as to why it rattled in the open position and not in the closed position. Someone then mentioned later on in the thread that this rattle is caused by a loose blade stop pin. So I shook my knife lightly again to see where the sound was coming from, it was coming from the stop pin like mentioned.
To double check I lightly touched the stop pin and it is loose. That is where the noise is coming from.
So onto my questions...:
1.) Why does it rattle in the open position and not the closed?
2.) If I don't get it fixed will it eventually become completely loose and fall out of the knife? Or is it just something that becomes loose eventually with carry and use?
3.) Is there a way to fix this myself?
4.) Will the ZT/Kershaw warranty cover it and fix the stop pin if I sent it in?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks,
Jessie

My pivot screws sometimes work themselves a bit loose with use and need tightened up a bit. Especially if I've broken the factory LocTite and taken it apart to clean it and then reassembled without using more loc-tite.

I'd first check that your frame screws are tight and that the pivot isn't looser than it needs to be.
When the lock bar exerts force on the blade it may change the geometry slightly, pushing on the blade which in turn pushes the scale away slightly which may create a small gap at the end around the lock pin. It shouldn't be large enough though that the pin could escape. This is how I'm envisioning this happening looking at my 0560 anyway. I have no particular experience with this issue.

Also check, is the pin not seated all the way? I'd pull it apart, reseat the pin, then tighten it all back up. My guess is that if not just a bit of tightening takes care of it, that reseating everything and then retightening will.

I will have to try that.
Though it's all nice and tight.
I will try the reseating.

If that doesn't work... what's next? Or is that when I send it in?

As long as the thumb studs, screws, and the lock-bar are solid, then the lock-up should be fine. The stop pin only contacts the blade in a closed state, and since you said it was tight when closed, there seems to be no current functional problem. If the stop pin is slightly loose, then that would explain why it only rattles in an open position (when there is no contact with the stop pin). You may not be able to notice the rattle in the closed position because the blade tang is pushing against the pin, especially if you are holding the blade closed.

Unless the stop pin is so misshapen that it falls out, it seems the knife's primary issue would be a loose blade when it is in a closed position.

As mentioned, I sent mine in today. I'll let you know what Kershaw does, or says.

The knife is fine.
I took it apart, reseated the pin.
It still rattles a tiny bit when open but barely.
It doesn't rattle at all when closed(even when I'm not holding the blade).
But the Pin is in tact. I don't see it falling out anytime soon.. or ever.
Thanks for all the feedback on this guys.

Jessie - It sounds like you have the issue resolved, but I will answer your questions anyhow:

1.) The stop pin only stops the blade in the closed position. In the open position, the thumbstuds serve as a stop pin.
2.) The stop pin sits in two holes - one in the liner, and one in the titanium back handle. The pin sits deep enough in these holes to be captured - it may have a little side to side play, but it should never be able to fall out.
3.) If it bothers you, you could try putting a little blue loctite on the ends of pin and letting it set up overnight.
4.) You are always welcome to send your knife in for warranty service. We would happily sort out the issue for you if it continues to bother you.

A little rattle can be annoying, but the knife should be sound and safe to use.
