Hey guys just got my new 0550. I though it locked up great until guy at the knife counter said the lockbar is way to far over and it's going to bend the lockbar. What do you guys think.

Never listen to the "guy at the knife counter."
Seriously, don't.
That is all.

Mine locks up a little earlier, about 45%, but the lock face is carbidized so it should't move for a while... Also I believe titanium has a tendency to retain is original shape, so it's harder to bend and keep it that way.

Stupidest thing I've heard in awhile

I mean I get what he's saying. The closer to straight the lock bar is at the cutout, the more force it's going to take pressing against the spine of the blade to get the titanium at the cutout to permanently bend. The problem with the argument is there is so small of a difference between any two lockup percentages--especially compared to the amount needed to bend it at any lockup--that the difference is nearly trivial. Put another way, at any percentage, you're going to have to go out of your way to get it to permanently bend at the cutout. Besides, if that was a valid concern, then you'd see more standardization when it comes to lock bar cutouts on the inside or outside of the lock bar (inside making the lock bar straighter at the cutout in general) and would see thinner cutouts.

I have two of the 0550's and I have one that locks up like this (machined lock bar). The other one has a laser cut lock bar and locks up 30% or so....

I wouldn't ever listen to the guy at the knife counter. Probably the same guy at the knife counter who told me the para military 2 is one of spyderco's least popular blade.

I learned not to listen to clerks, or people at the counter. Being a drummer for almost 12 years, it's common knowledge that "the guy at the counter" (Guitar Center or Sam Ash) is usually a schmuck who doesn't know a thing, and is going to damage your perception of reality. Apparently the guy at the knife counter isn't too far off...

The lockup looks just fine. Don't do a thing except use it.

Awesome, just what i figured. Through my time of collecting and working on guns I've learned that the guy at the gun counter is commonly misinformed. And it appears to be the same with the knife counter:)

Thanks for your insight guys and I'm loving the 550! My first zt and certainly not my last. I'm thinking 561 or maybe an 0200 next. Beasts of blade they are!!

+1. Great advice.

9 times out of 10 the 'guy at the knife counter' knows about as much about knives as the McDonald's cashier knows about fine cuisine.

Here's a question though. At what point does over lockup become a probem? When the Ti touches the steel liner when it's Locked up? Or before that?

When the lockbar touches the other side and you are experiencing significant blade play.
