ZT0780 defects - anyone else spot any? *PICS!*

Please note, my intention here is not to stir up any contention or cause trouble, just seeing if my case is isolated or not.

Anyway, I received my two ZT0780s in the mail today, and noticed a few minor issues with both.

Both have what appear to be "burrs," for lack of a better term, in the handle's jumping on the liners at the rear of the knife. I'll have to snag pics tonight or tomorrow to better explain, but it looks like they have burrs on the edge of the jimping "teeth," or have a "wire edge," and were never given a complete finish after machining. This won't affect the knives' use at all, but for what these cost at street price, I feel they don't belong there.

Only one of them had a scale that was not properly aligned with the liner and back spacer. This is purely cosmetic, since I can just loosen the scale screws, align the scale, and tighten them back down. Again, it's more a case of "a $100+ knife shouldn't have flaws of this nature." I don't have the knives in front of me, but I believe one was serial 0242 and the other 0296 (or very close to those).

Has anyone else noticed anything like this, or are most of you still waiting to get yours in? :D

Looks like the right side liners on both knives are "off center." Look closely and you'll see the clip screw holes for right side clip-up carry don't line up with the scale.

Note that you can see the burrs or hooks on both liners (sort of).

+100 internets to anyone who can tell me what the drawings are of in the background. :)

Background looks like electrical schematics for circuitry. Do you study electrical physics?

About my 0780, it looks similar, except everything lines up. I'd say that since many have the same shape/ features you got a normal blade with slightly off center jimping/ milling on the back end. If you want, you can send it to me if you have an issue with it :D

Do any of those "defects" effect it's function as a knife? Maybe it's a Monday knife and needs to be returned to get it rehabilitated into a safe queen.

I don't get too upset with ZT or Kershaw because I buy them to use hard. If I did find a defect that bothered me appearance wise or effected it's use I would simply contact them and have them repair or replace it. They are great when it comes to that kind of stuff!!

The hook are kind of cool looking, but the scale being off that far would bother me too. I had a ZT that had a defect in it so I emailed ZT, told them what it was and that I was mailing my knife back for an exchange and that was all it took.

As the the back ground, the others already took my guess. An electrical diagram, with the name Suzuki on it.

Well yeah, I'd say not being able to install a clip the way you want because the holes don't line up with the scale does in fact affect its functionality. I'm not picky at all when it comes to little things like this, but the scales that don't like up with the holes would bother me, especially since that's something so fundamental.

With that being said, ZT has very few lemons compared the other companies I've tried. If you do have a problem, they seem to be lickity split on fixing it as well.

Just sand them off if they bother you that much.

I recently got a 0550 and the swedge grinds don't line up perfectly from one side to another.

So, sell it or use it? I purchased it with the intention to use it so...just use it and you'll never notice any flaws in the knife.

My 0780 was missing the tip...it was squared off instead of needle sharp also had a blemish on the blade..sent back for a refund

I purchased the knives as users (I MIGHT keep one as a collector's piece), so the hooks don't bother me too much aside from them possibly hooking onto fabric or something (from a user standpoint), but the scale issue will need to be fixed. I'm about 99% sure I can just loosen the screws and realign things, but if not, they'll have to go back (I carry tip up). The hooks just bothered me a bit, considering what these cost. Aside from these small items, I'm pleased with them. Lockup is early and solid, they're sharp, and fell great in the hand. :)

My backspacer wasn't perfect but was easily fixed by myself.

PS, I have Serial # 297, which is one after the one you have.

It looks like mine doesn't have the hooks as badly as yours, but it doesn't have any of the open clip holes lined up straight. The butt end ones are both off, bad enough you'd never get a screw lined up and the one on the front, is better but not perfect.

I started to loosen it up and see if things would line up, but I thought when I tighten it back up it seems the scales will just have one way to fit and that's like it is now.

I guess I'll just leave the clip alone, but it's a bit disappointing ZT seems to have rushed these out, without doing things right and dropped the model so fast.

Now I am hoping the place where I ordered never gets them in stock. They sound like a real dissapointment.

Too bad we don't get to hear about the hundreds of happy customers with perfect knives.

Personally I don't see any risk here, if your knife has issues Kershaw will fix it or refund your money.

I have another one coming, if it's better I'll just put it up and use this one. No, the holes not lining up don't hurt the way it will cut. (I'll just leave it tip down) Everything else is fine on it. I'm not going to bother returning it in any case. Still I find it a little strange that we heard about this model so long and as soon as it's out, it's dropped.

Well, I never said I was disappointed with the knife in general. It's a tank, just like my 0350. It's just not as "polished" as I'd have expected for the price. Provided the scales line up and allow me to carry tip up, we're golden. I'll either leave the hooks, or file them off carefully. Not a hard fix on either account, just didn't expect to have to do work on them myself. As far as it's use as a user knife, I'd readily recommend it to anyone based on my short time with it.

Hey man.........I'm sure you can cancel your order, just hang in there and see if yours is good, if not, send it back. :)
