Came across this head at a flea market I frequent. Picked it up for 8 dollars. It's well used and pretty pitted but still has some life in it. There are some makers marks on the poll but I can't seem to make out much past the first letter. I think that may be a "W". Anyone have have any thoughts on what it could be?

We'll see if the pics work

I do not know who made it, but it's very obviously not a 20th century axe.
I do not know how old but I know that an eye shape much closer to what we know today was in widespread use as far back as the mid 1800's.

I'd start researching axes of the era, it's probably gonna be a tough one though.

Looks like a similar pattern and vintage as Yankee Josh's shipwreck axe he posted recently in the "What did you rehang today" thread. His was made by Jerison White I believe.

Thanks for the input guys. I wasn't expecting quite that old so it's interesting. I'm fond of the handle shape so eventually I'd like to make one from some hickory or some black locus I have kicking around. I think some of the mushrooming deformed the stamp so an actual id especially from that far back seems unlikely. Happy to add it to the collection though.

It's a beautiful old axe. Do you have a full length picture of the handle? Too bad the beetles got to it, but at least you can still take a pattern from it.

I thought I got one but I looks like I overlooked that. I'll snap one when I get a chance. It feels like the perfect length in my opinion. It measured 32 inches from end to end. Tracing it for a pattern is definitely a good idea! I'll have to do that.
