Calm down Dude and show alittle gentlemen courtesy. As we will answer your question not in like manner. We've discussed this before here.A simple educational study would reveal that stag is from European deer.It is farmed and harvested in many of those countries. For some reason their antlers grow harder/denser and with different color over there. The antler here in America is of different density and color. The trained eye can tell the difference.Perhaps someone of university employ can add to this discussion for his benefit.DM

Alright Sharp Dude, I tell you what I understand about the issue.

All males in the deer family annually grow a set of Antlers (some females too). The antlers from deer named Stag ie. Red Stag in Europe and Sambar Stag in India are highly valued as handle material due to the thicker nature of a stag's antlers. Being thickier, stag antler is more barky, bumpy, in general shows more texture and character that people desire in knife handles. So lets call this "Richness of Character". I feel certain that Stag being used as the name for antler handle material was just a shortening of "Stag Antler."

All deer from Asia to Europe to both Americas generate antlers but most with less "Richness of Character" than stag antler and are less desirable. Now Elk antler sometimes called Elk horn is very good and gets identified as Elk similar to Stag antler being called Stag.

Smaller deer such a whitetail's antler lacks the thickness, width, strait beams, flatness, and most importantly "Richness of Character" to be used very often as handle material. Frankly, bone is may be a better choice for smooth handles.

In any case, some people refer all antler no matter its source as Stag just as some people refer to all Petroleum jellies as Vasaline or all adjustable wrenches as Cresent wrenches.

Oh, Sharp...does that refer to your tone or something else?

EDIT:
A stag is a mature male deer.

Well that muddles my nicely wrapped comment.

So here is a Red Stag for your viewing pleasure.

Or it used to being going out with the guys when you couldn't get a date on the weekend. Seriously, I doubt that many could improve on Flatlander's explanation that "stag" is technically not the same thing as "antler" or "horn" and this, IMHO, is the source of much confusion to those such as Sharp Dude. So perhaps, we have educated him!!

well i say , blunt sort of chap is'nt he ?
hay i could not post as member ship expired
but did check winkpeda
seems the chicken is right once again! British car is in there!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stag_(disambiguation)

A stag is a mature male deer. The term is also used for a male animal castrated after the secondary sex characteristics have developed to such a point as to give it the appearance of a mature male. The phrase "going stag" refers to going to a dance or party single.

Stag may also refer to:

* Fag stag a gay term
* San Sebastian Stags, of San Sebastian College – Recoletos of Manila
* South Devon Railway Leopard class, a South Devon Railway 4-4-0ST steam locomotive
* South Trafford Archaeological Group based in Greater Manchester
* Stag (Amy Ray album), a 2001 album by Amy Ray
* Stag (film), a 1997 film starring John Stockwell
* Stag (album), a 1996 album by The Melvins
* Stag Arms, a firearms manufacturer located in New Britain, Connecticut
* Stag (barque), a famous Nova Scotian clipper ship, built in 1854.
* Stag film, slang for pornographic movie
* Stag profit, made by an investor termed a "stag"
* Student Theatre at Glasgow, (often abbreiviated STaG) The University of Glasgow's Theatre Society
* Triumph Stag, a British car
* Stag party, a celebration for a man soon-to-be married
so trax ya got your popcorn drink and ticktes but no show?
pooor fellow...
no one to play with now...;)

Thanks for the Wiki Dave.
Well Stag are large mature males so any deer antler could be stag technically if from a large mature male of any species even a Roe deer. But I'd say typically we all understand stag to come huge brutes like the one in the picture I added above.

Anyone up for a Red Stag hunt?

Yep, my understanding is that the term "stag", and I think this would be confirmed by the first (which is usually considered to be the most technically correct) dictionary definition is that it is best applied to a Red Stag. I think I'd have to up my 223 a few notches for that one.

...RE: Sambar Stag..."Seems there is a free-roaming herd of these Asian deer on the St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is a 12,358-acre barrier island located in the Apalachicola Bay of Florida's Panhandle, a bit south of Panama City."...I hadda copy that statement from The Hunting Report...

...Not too much won't be found somewhere around here...LMBO...:D...They say some guy named Hoffa runs the preserve......:p

...Here's one they took in 2004...Weighed in at 580 pounds...Note the thickness and areas of straightness of the rack...Lotsa nice scales could come outa that beauty...;)

Heck I used to squirrel hunt in the river delta above Apalachicola Bay. You have to bring your bass boat to get up river to the area where we hunted.

Interesting article Darryl and nice Sambar stag.
Boy wouldn't I like to gets some drops.

I'd say .338 or bigger. That guy's rifle looks to be a heavy 26" or longer bbl.
I'd like to know what cal.

My 4570 would drop him for sure. I also have a nice .54cal smoke pole and have a photo of a full sized American Bison that was charging a black powder hunter. The hunter shot the brute at about 30 feet and the ball flipped that buff backwards off his hoofs:eek: Got to love the power of that old stuff;).

See now fellas, a troll stops by to mess with us and we've turned this into a most interesting tread...the power of positive thinking.

JB,

I've primative arms hunted with a .50 cal Hawkin. It'll but a big whitetail "STAG" right on the ground. :)

Ya gotta love the smoke poles. I don't hunt, but I'm looking at a rack on my wall with six of them in it and I've got another rack with one more plus a 10 Ga. side by side. Much fun to shoot!
