W&SS Forum Custom Neck Knife Challenge!!!

Great summary of your thoughts Mike (Wildewinds). We agree in most areas, but differ noticeably in a few. For example, the knife from Ryan knife didn't feel that comfortable in my hand, and the Scout knife felt to me like the epitome of a neck knife. I think that Christofs is a step above, and that Chuck's (Scout) has the most potential (work on that fit & finish). C Bryant rocked the kydex sheath and it worked really well with the knife. Bring the knife up to snuff with the sheath and you've got a winner.

And for you benders...look at C Bryant's work closely...it's kydex at it's simplest and best.

So what did you four all think of this?!

Brian's sheath was my favorite of the leather ones. Rick's was the prettiest but Brian's worked best for me. It held the knife perfectly with enough retention but still easy to draw.

It sucks you didn't get to enter one Ray but it was cool you were able to judge. Did you see anything that you would like to incorporate into your knives?

That along with ergonomics were two of my three goals with the challenge. Time to work on edge geometry now.

Thanks Ray!

For only having been making knives for a year I am pretty happy with the results. I try to give the best possible edge geometry and before fit and finish and the leather wok was added in my scores looked pretty good. That knife was never intended to be a neck knife, but the opportunity presented and I didn't want to miss entering this challenge. I am very grateful to all the testers and glad to be a part of this. It also showed me that I still have a lot of room for improvement.

I hear ya Chris! Ive only been making since March and it was a little daunting entering against the "big boys" Its good feedback and hopefully we will improve the next go around.

with my wife back working full-time and both of us dead tired, this competition has been the single most exciting thing for me in these past weeks :D
congratulations to all winners and participants, and thanks for entertaining us amateur on-lookers
If the jurors still have the knives it would be nice to have some group photos taken, sheathed & unsheathed, in hi-res, for purely pornographic purposes...
again, great going!

Congrats everyone! A big thank you to the testers and Jason. I wish I could say this was an improvement over the last challenge for me, but hey gotta start somewhere. I actually HATE the ergonomics on my knife, so you might be alone on that one Widlewinds :) I'm not surprised the the results. It was at one point clean shaving hair off my arm, but I decided to try and make is sharper and screwed it all up. I could not get the edge back after that. Hand sharpening is a skill I REALLY need more practice with. The polka-dots don't do anything for the knife in my opinion. It was a failed experiment adding grip. All that said it probably did slightly better than I thought it would for a knife nobody was supposed to ever see or use that I was going to beat the hell out of.

Again, a big thanks to everyone for making this happen. FANTASTIC job on keeping everything on track and FAAAAAAST.

From the perspective of 7th loser I can appreciate the effort that everyone put into this contest. Thank you for coordinating what turned out to be a fun event. Congratulations to Koyote. "Tony" over in R & D has some work to do.

Really good retention for leather...makes an almost kydex like "snick" when sheathing the knife. The big "drain hole" could have been toned down a bit. It didn't get in the way of anything, didn't really add anything, and looks funky.

wow.... What a close race. Thank goodness for "pretty points"!!!!

Congrats to Christof.

Bruce..... two Canadians in the top three!

Big thanks to the testers and JChasVD for putting this all together. Stuff like this really pulls this little community closer together.

Thanks, Rick. and everyone else.

Thanks to the testers and the whole bush bash crowd. It was really cool that the testers stepped up.

There's always a lot of learning from these, and there's definitely a half dozen new (to me) makers to keep an eye on!

Great job Christof.

Jason thank you for putting this together. And thank you to the testers and their comments.

Thanks for all the testers who put out the hard work in doing the test.

Man I took a beating for pretty, note to self.

Someone mentioned it would be good to let the water or blood drain out... heheh. But, truth be told, it wasn't my favorite feature. :)

I knew that style would be a risk but I just had to take the chance! :)
