“Wrinkled” steel?

I wish I had taken these pictures before I hammered out the mushrooming. It was a lot. Maybe you can get an idea how much from the pictures after the hammering.
My question is about the lines. They look exactly like wrinkles in fabric. I tried lots of different angles, but few pictures worked.
Can anyone say what I’m dealing with here? I know beating on the poll can blow out the eye, but the eye is perfect. Did the poll hammering wrinkle the head? I’d expect to see misalignment when viewed from the top or bottom but can’t see or feel any. Maybe the “wrinkles” are just bunched up?
Or maybe the heavy mushrooming is biasing my guesses?
I’ve not seen this before and am wondering if this tool can even be saved. Are these “wrinkles” as big a deal as I think they are?

Looks more like grinding was done on it to thin the cheeks out or something.
