Hello Everyone,

I'm just starting out with my first stock removal knife made from 0-1.
Would any of you be able to provide me with instructions on how to heat treat my blade at home?

I have access to a propane torch, a toaster oven, and veggie oil and a magnet.

What type of setup do I need to put together so that I can heat treat the blade with the torch i.e. two bricks with the blade hanging in between, etc?

Any information would be extremely helpful!

Thanks!

Hello Pete, I noticed no one had addressed your question. I was once in your spot and heat treating a knife with a propane torch is actually possible but you'll need a few fire bricks to help you along. You'll need to build a small enclosure to hold the heat better. It helps if your knife is fairly small also. There have been many posts on this particular issue so if you use the search button and search the Shop Talk Archives as well as the active forum for heat treating information and propane torches and you should turn up quite a bit of information.

Feel free to email me if you want and I'll explain how I went about it when I just got started.

The blade that I'm currently working on is about 8" overall; 5" handle and 3" blade. I have another knife scribed on some 0-1 that I haven't profiled yet. That one has a 5" blade and 5" handle.

Thanks again for your help everyone!

Regards,
Pete

Try going to your local bookstore. The $50 knife shop by Wayne Goddard is a great place to start out on the cheap.
Also try Admiral steel web site under Tech info.

Are you looking for precision methods or "Kentucky windage" methods?

If you have access to a campfire and a blow dryer, you should be able to use that to get to critical temp. Not as clean as propane, but it will work.
