Well, I got the blades to skate a file...put them in my oven @ 415 degrees last night. Got the nice straw color. THis morning went to do the same thing and the temperature is still @ 415 to 420....now there are blues in there!! Whats going on and will the blades hold there egde?

I thought 0-1 could even be tempered up to the 450 range....should I finish these off and see how they work?

Did you temper all night? If so, that's the cause. 1 to 3 hours is all that's needed. I would try a file on them and mybe do some cutting tests and see how they do. If they are to soft you can heat treat agian with no problem,
(multi quench) :)

I didnt leave the blades in over night but 2 hrs last night....then I was going to go for another 2 hr run this morning. Within the first hr this morning the tangs and edge turned a purpleish shade.....but the thermometer says its at 415 degrees???? Guess I'll put an edge on them then see.....i'll file test first and see if it bites...if it doesnt bite too easy then I may be okay....Damn! I thought I had this 0-1 figured out...

Did you remove the blades from the oven when you turned it on this morning?
You need to preheat the oven for a while to even out the heat before putting the blades in for a temper, if you didn't you probably had a spike in the temp.

no, I didnt remove them...that may be it. Guess I have to HT again..Oh well...Live and learn:)

What would I be looking for with the file? It doesnt scate but I can still pinch the metal...it sort of scates still??

The file should skate with light pressure and barely cut a little with heavy pressure.
01 can take a little more heat than 1084,1095 ect. so you may be OK and if it was at the higher heat only a short time it may not have lowered the hardness to much.

A dull file will skate and NOT cut, A sharp file will barley cut. This is what I go by using the same files every time, these are dedicated files. Gib

Sounds like thats what I have going on....I may be alright?

I'll get a few more files out and if a dull one bits I'll re HT...
Thanks Gib and Don

yep..dull file scates and a scap file will bite but not as much as a fully anealed piece. The sharp file doesnt really bite but more like grabs...I'll continue on..... :D

I had a thermometer in. It never showed that it went above 425..ever...

I may just HT again.....but then again, the dull file skates and a sharp file wants to skate till I push down on it so who knows...

If the dull file skates, and the new file will only cut with moderate pressure, i wouldnt re heat treat just yet. I would put a "quickie" handle on one of the blades, sharpen, and do some real life testing. If the edge holds up to your satisfaction, your good to go.

I'll do that to one of the small ones......less grinding ;)

This is good to know, in case I need to cut some barley! :) ;) :)

If you've never cut Barley with a sharp file, your missing half of life! ;)
A while back I was clamping things in my VICE to file. :o

Oh Bgoode.....what the file will feel like is skating along and then it will put on the brakes when you hit a soft spot. It's hard to mistake.

well....I tested an edge and it didnt last like I like them to....

Got it to shave and chopped a while...then no more shave!

So I have HT them again and back in the stove they are. This time I have them in my larger oven and will watch the temp more closely....

Peter,

My ht always skates before the oven and when my "gut" says that was a good hardning. Are you saying that the file would hit the breaks before the 400 temper...or after?

One thing, Get another thermometer. I have seen those cheap oven thermometers vary widely right of the box. I now use a digital thermometer with the thermocouple placed right next to the blade. You can get a DVM with a thermocouple form Harbor Freight for $40 and sometimes on sale for $20. also it doesn't hurt to do the first temp cycle at 375, test and work your way up till you get the proper hardness. anyway just my $.02

right now I have 2 cheap thermometers in with them....right @ 400

I also have 4 test pieces to get the RC tested on...hopefully tomorrow.

My mom works at a motor building plant and they have a RC tester :D
