I have a couple of 0-1 blades. Is it normal to get stains from using these and what is something to minimise the stains?
I dont mind the look of the stained steel, just currious what is the norm?

O1 is a great non stainless tool steel, and will stain and rust sometimes by simply looking at it.

Keep it oiled down, and rust shouldn't be a big problem.

I know it stains easy. I think I'll like it in 6 mo. I am going to try to etch my last initial tonight then just use the darn thing.

I just got through using ferric chloride on my stockremoval 0-1 blade and it looks very neat. IMHO 0-1 is a great knife steel, both forged and stock removal!

I like 0-1 steel. I think it looks cool when it stains. I'll keep reminding myself it isnt rust!!!:)

It is not rust but it will rust if allowed to. As indicated above, it will discolor immediately upon exposure to moisture. You can remove the discoloration by buffing but what's the use(?).

I have a lil' 0-1 that I have been messing around with. My 3rd. Seems like it sort of "settles" in after it has darkened some. Or am I just not noticing? I'd like to see some patinaed blade pictures. Just to see what these will look like in a year or so.

I usualy blue tool steel, or that's how it comes from the maker in the case of forged tools. I can't say I do this with my knives, but it makes sense.

The Japanese have a product called camelia oil that they use to keep rust off things. Unlike petroleum products it's pretty nice to be around. I'm tol Japanese women put it in their hair, so it's pretty nice stuff. The slightest dab worked into the tool seems to keep things nicely protected.
