ok so i'm checking out pricing for 01 from MSC supply..... two different brand of 01... both 2 inches wide 5/32" thick and 36" long...... one is $27.00 "made in usa" the other is $41.00 from starret. should i worry about the quality of the other steel? are AISI regulations strict enough so its not a problem? because thats a really big difference in price

Are you sure you're looking at the same thing ? If it is being sold as O1 is has to be within the AISI composition standards. But there may be other differences. Are they annealed or is one hot rolled ? is one spheroidize annealed and the other annealed and precision ground ? Check the specs carefully. If you're going to forge you don't care about precision ground.

i'm a stock removal guy for now..... seems like the differences are the tolerances..... length some are +or- .620" or evenb as much as .015" in thicknesses! so far pops has the best prices. but that actually depends on what steel he's dealing with. should i worry about these tollerances? it seems like .015" could make a big difference

It isn't so much the tolerances but precision ground means that they should also have ground off the layer of decarburization. That might save you the trouble of doing it, if you can get the thickness you want. That means if you are making a 1/8" thick blade, if you can get 1/8" decarb free ground stock, it saves you some work.

I've bought 01 of different brands and it all acts the same.
Buy the best price :) save money.

You're paying for the name if you buy the Starrett. In things like micrometers Starrett's quality is usually worth it...but I can't see paying that difference for a tool steel.

Forget MSC and those prices, buy it from

http://www.toolanddie.com

They're fast, courteous, and carry precision ground O1 for VERY low prices.
