Well, I made my first knife and the 4 to follow out of 01.
I like that it will discolor some and now I am hesitant.

I just formed my first leather sheath using warm water and my knife. I did wrap the knife in plastic wrap. BUT how long till the moisture is out? It feels dry but my knife seems to rust when I put it in it. I just formed it this morning and was thinking that the leather still had moisture in it OR my 01 was just going to have to rust and me clean it back up when needed.

Whats your experience here?

Thanks guys............

I think you should expect it to take days for the leather to dry thoroughly. I usually lay it over a warm air vent on the floor for several days before I risk leaving the knife in it.

someone actually told me that this mornin!!! Funny......

Heh, do a search for Elephant Scrotum if you wanna see what leather does in microwave. Did give an interesting look.

ALso make sure that you treat blade of knife somehow, oil, something. I like Borebutter, it's a blackpowder shooting thing, but seems to work well to protect my high carbon blades. Smells good too, kinda minty, for an added bonus.

I'll get the bore butter. I like the sound of that stuff.....minty steel!

does anyone have a picture of 01 steel that has a patinia? So I know what to expect..........

Do you know how that leather was tanned?
If it was chrome tanned it will be very caustic when wet.
I believe a lot of oil tanned leather is actual a combo of oil and chrome and be just as bad also.
Regards,
Greg
