I have been arguing with a guy about the recent 116 Caper BO and I have told him only 57 were made(I was off by one). Here is what he told me tonight:
ok i have read all your emails with my wife and here is the deal. i called my uncle who got me into buck knives and he sent me a copy of the email you got being a buck club member and he said yes its the same knife that buck factory was selling at their holiday sale and he said that they try to sell knives to club members then next thing you know they have them in their factory sale floor and he has been ripped off before. i am sorry to be telling you this and i know its a hard fact to swallow but any limited number of anything comes with a certificate of authenticty and joes name has nothing to do with any of this. so no email makes a knife special so do what you want with the info but just because you were lied to by buck doesnt mean you should consciencly pass these lies or miss leading info on to uniformormed ebay people.

I can't hardly believe that! Any opinions please?

Well Eric, I think your friends Uncle is FOS. For one thing, there are hundreds and hundreds of build outs that were made in very limited numbers and I've yet to see one with a COA. The holiday sale took place after the closing date when they could be ordered off the list, so there may have been some not sold until the store sale.

As far as the Caper goes, the list I was sent to order from said 57 were "available", but not how many were made. I'm not going to say there weren't more made, but I'll still take Buck's word until I have other proof to the contrary.

He's definately not my friend calling me a liar. Just a random guy on the auction site.

Eric

Here's another response from the same person:
"Hi,My husband and I happen to live near the Buck Knife Factory. In the course of Christmas shopping for my husbad I asked him to look at your listing of this knife and your reply to my last question because he had just been to Buck's holiday clearance sale and while this is a buildout knife, there is however nothing limited or custom about it since they were selling it directly out of the buildout knives display case at the store. More than 57 of this particular knife was sold just in the couple hours he was at the store. He had already been very interested in this knife at the store. So you might want to look further into this information because from everything we understand it isn't correct and I don't want you to get into any trouble by falsly advertising this item on ebay. Thanks for your speedy reply"

What? justbecause i am obviously an expert and also i have been ripped off and also i am very articulate which means if you didnt know that i am very good at expressing myself in words and writing better at least than my 11 year old son who has also been ripped off and i hate it and you are not special because i know that this is not the actual case of the matter in fact and also that i am right
;) lol

While it is possible in theory to do more of a build out after the main run, it is highly improbable. The nature of build outs is to use up excess parts. Typically the number built is constrained by one of the parts, usually blades, however it could be handles also. The 118 D2 BO is the only one I can think of that we ran a second run as we had a ton of excess blades (have no fear, they are all gone now) Sometimes there are a couple sample BO's floating around that do not make it into inventory but end up in someone's office. Again not a normal scenario. Just because the guy was here during a sale does not mean he knows what the real story is. A person like that does not have access to the info we have internally. Admittedly (as per the build out list thread), sometimes even our info can be suspect, however that is the exception not the rule. But that is what makes collecting fun sometimes right? IMHO, Anyone who thinks Joe is mis-leading or dishonest has basic trust issues in their life and probably suspects everyone and everything.

The correct # of those per the data I have is 58.

Dont know if this pertains or not but at the factory sale last week there were some 116 build outs in the display case. They were expensive, $90 IIRC so I passed. But there were some available 3 days into the sale.
