does anyone have any comments about this carbon steel used by camillus, especially in comparison with ATS34/154CM or VG10 or D2? I'm considering getting either the large (5inch +) or small (4inch) Camillus CQB fixed blade in that steel with the black coating, cos the price is rather reasonable.

how is the steel in terms of corrosion resistance, edge holding, toughness, sharpenability?

any comments on that particular fixed blade?

I can't do searches....

Thanks!

hi, I didn't have the search function so I just spent the last 2 hours going through 1 years' worth of postings on the camillus forum as well as knifeforums....

I've found my answer to the properties of the steel, except that there is no comparative information of the carbon steel wrt ATS34 or VG10.

What I would really like are reviews/comments about the CQB Black Ops series, especially CQB3...

thanks!

I thought there was another thread by with some answers at the Blade Discussion Forum.
To repeat what I remember.
This is a proprietary steel by Camillus, it's suppose to behave much like the 52100 and there are rumors Carbon V is the same steel.
It should cut quite well. As for other aspects, I don't really remember.
The bad thing is that because all the newer posts are on a database, it's thus far impossible to use google to search bladeforums.com. Hope spark would eventually get everything sorted out... I have no money to pay for a membership :p

There are some good comments about this steel (or its predecessor) in Joe Talmadge's FAQ on steels. It is purportedly very similar to 52100 but with a tad less chromium, and a pinch of vanadium. If it's anything like Carbon V, which I believe Camillus produces for Cold Steel (and it may be the same steel they use for Cold Steel now), it's very, very good high carbon steel. Easy to sharpen, takes and holds a superb edge, but (like any other high carbon steel) it will rust if you don't clean and dry the blade after use. It will also take on a nice patina in time. Camillus has a deserved reputation for superb heat treat, IMHO.
