I've been looking at my 0560 scales and comparing it with other 0560/0561 scales. I noticed something. Here's a closeup of the scales on a 0561:

Notice how the scale is etched on the edge. Then I looked at mine:

No etching on that edge. I did some poking around the Internets, and noticed that everyone's 0560 doesn't have the etching on that edge, but all of the 0561's do. I was under the impression (maybe wrongfully so?) that the only difference between them was the color of the scales. Just curious why the difference in this design feature between the two?

Thanks! :)

EDIT: here's a better closeup of a 0560 showing the etching not done on the black scales:

are you talking about what looks like jimping on the g10? opposite the lockbar? If so, my 561 matches yours. no jimping in that area.

Yes, TX, the jimping opposite the lockbar :) I wonder why some have it and some don't. Seems odd. Was it originally that way when the first ones came out and it was changed?

not sure, to be honest until you posted that picture, i never noticed any jimping in that area before. ZT/Kershaw seems to constantly refine their designs, one aspect that can fustrate if your example is missing a certain detail on another. On the other hand they are always improving on an already good design, something i've experienced quite a bit with my 551.

After all I've seen I agree that Kershaw/ZT constantly make changes to improve their product and make the best knife they can make. Without having one with the jimping on that scale I can't tell which is more comfortable/nicer, but I also don't know which one came before the other :)

The jimping in the finger groove was removed to make the knife more consistent with Rick's design. The XM-18 only has the jimping in the finger groove on the titanium side, and we decided the 0560 should be the same way. There are some knives out there that have jimping on both sides, but the current production pieces will only have it on the lockbar.

In any case, having jimping on both sides will not hurt the function of the knife or make it uncomfortable, so if you have one with jimping on both sides, no worries! The change was mainly cosmetic.

Thanks Jimmer!! I like that it was moved over to be more in line with Rick's design. Happy to have one, it's an amazing piece of work!

The change must have been made early on because one of my 0560's is serial #0226 and has the smooth (no jimping) finger groove.

What about the difference in finish on the titanium side, some seem shinier and some seem to have a more matte look. Is there a reason for this? and which one is the newer version?
