Gents, I have limited experience with framelocks. I am a proud owner of a 0300 and 0301, and I LOVE them both. I am definitely going to pick up one of the new 0566 models, but I wanted to ask for those of you with extensive experience: is there ANY disadvantage to having SS as a frame lock material rather than titanium? Do you guys use them that hard that you would notice the strength difference? Also, just how much better is ELMAX compared to S30V? I have a few fixed blades in ELMAX, but nothing besides my 0300's in S30V; love the steel so far.

Any help would be appreciated!

I think steel is stronger than Ti. The difference is in strength-to-weight. But the difference in the weight of a steel liner and a Ti line is negligible. Steel is fine.

Steel is stronger than Ti for its volume, but it's also heavier. Ti has a better strength to weight ratio.

Ti locks can have issues that steel locks won't have, think steel on steel as opposed to Ti on steel.

From what I have read on the forum the majority of knife nuts prefer elmax to S30V.

Titanium has excellent corrosion resistance, almost as resistant as platinum. It doesnt develop rust as in iron oxide but can develop an oxidized layer. Anodizing is an example of this. Depending on the alloy, it can be as strong as steel but up to 40% lighter. It's heavier than aluminum but can be twice as strong. As far as handlescales go, full Ti scales appeal to me much more than SS steel. Disadvantages between either are prob negligible. Just a preference. Actually, I dont have any knives in full SS anymore...

elmax in my experiences is alot harder to sharpen but takes and holds a much better edge. i used a 0350 at work for a week and trashed the edge my 0560 is on its first day and couldnt tell i even used it yet

I have a lot of Ti framelocks and am looking forward to the 566 in SS. I could be wrong on this, but it seems there will be less lock wear with SS since it is steel on steel and a lower likelyhood of lock stickiness. And I much prefer Elmax over S30V.

Have mine on preorder:-) The SS on the lockside will also avoid the dreaded "sticky" lockbar...resulting from oil on the Ti lockface. Im loving the growing Hinderer ZT family:D

For me it's all about the weight. I prefer Ergal or Ti. All three are going to be more than enough strong.

And also the Titanium galling on the steel lockface.

Good then you can make me a CF scale for mine without having to send my knife in. :)

I am seriously considering placing a pre-order for the ZT0566. Do I wish it was Ti? Sure that'd be nice, but that would also jack the price up considerably and price it off my radar. With the SS it stays affordable... and with the ELMAX blade steel, hard to resist at the price point KAI will be offering it.

BTW... here's the data sheet on ELMAX from Uddeholm's website in case anyone is interested in this level of detail. :)

i also have a 566 on preorder i love the hinder designs and the fact that it is elmax puts it over the edge for me.
