This site is being inundated with spam. A $1.00 annual registered user fee would clean that up real quick. Let people read/lurk for free. If they want to post it'll cost them a $1.00 annually. Just a thought.

Sounds like a cool idea. Just thinking some possible issues:

- would it cost more than $1 on average in money and effort to process the payment and membership? If so, would people balk at paying the cost, even if it's absolutely minimal?

-would it affect the reputation of the site and Spark?

Instead of an annual fee for registered users, I'd suggest a one-time $1 registration fee to open a "registered user account"?

That should be enough to foil the spammers and should not be overly annoying or pricey.

I just don't get the spam....

No way am I clicking one of those links. But it is like a monkey was given a keyboard, and a mouse that distributes a link with every click.

The monkey gets a banana for every time it bangs on the keys and then clicks on the link mouse.

Good idea -

I have experience with a VB forum I admin with "users" who post one-post spam without ever registering.

That is not the same version of VB this forum runs, so it might be an exploit only for older versions, but worth mentioning.

Personally, I think this would drastically reduce active membership. If active members is the goal, which I would assume leads to registered users becoming paying members, I would think this would keep a lot of folks from registering. Although as a positive, it might reduce trolling and summertime tomfoolery of kids when school is out.

Currently there is 18,769 Active members, I don't know the parameter set for what is considered active, but I understand the default is 30 days. It's been on the rise the last couple of months.

Spam is getting bad and I try to report it when I find it, I've gotten in the habit of every once in a while scanning "new posts" for odd thread titles. I know, get a life right?:p. But I understand why a fix is needed.

I am no computer guy, but isn't there another way to foil Spammers without asking people to make a payment? One dollar isn't much, but the point alone would have steered me to other places when I first found the site.

Now, if active members isn't the goal, and the well being of the site comes from views alone, be they "guest", or "platinum", then I would say the one dollar initial fee would be a fair option.

Just thought I'd throw my two cents out there. It's easy to say, "Of course I'd pay a dollar to be a part of this site" because we're already a part of it. This might push folks to other free sites, I don't know.

Nor do I Instatweet or Facespace, but I understand a lot of the knife community is there, and it's free as far as I know.

Like I said, my two cents, that and about six bucks might get you a cup of coffee!

Bad idea. It'd severely decrease activity.

The Basic membership eliminates ads and gives you some other perks like avatar, signature, and limited number of private messages. $10/year is pennies a day.

Perhaps an "ad free" membership for a few bucks annually. I've seen this done on other forums.

EDIT: Nevermind, misunderstood the OP. I still don't think it's a good idea. I doubt there's a real solution to eliminate span that wouldn't otherwise harm the forum. And to be honest, compared to what I've seen on some other forums, the spam here is quite tame. Many forums require actual approval by moderators to activate accounts, but that'd be more work than just the occasional spam clean-up.

I agree with lessismore. I think it'd put most people off simply because it's easier elsewhere. I'll note that I still to this day deal with people in the community that don't use PayPal or even credit/debit cards.

It's been a decade or so since my registration, but does it have captcha and email verification already?

Good for a trial period. It'll eliminate the riffraff but curtail online advertising revenue from the riffraffs.

It's not going to happen. The spam is being dealt with, and we'll be switching to another forum software platform in the future that will solve other issues as well
