Well guys, it is done!

My first 1,000 posts in this forum and the very most of them I posted here in the Traditional Folders & Fixed Blade Forum. It´s great spending time here. I found a lot of nice and generous guys here in this forum. Real gentlemen!!! Now want to give you guys something back... my very first giveaway.

It is great and I like it alot here in this forum, more than in others. People treat others fair and do not diss around to get anyone kicked off. So to me it´s some kind family flair in this forum. Maybe this is reason, why I had never posted so many posts in a single forum at www since I can think.

I want to give my good ol' Otter Ankermesser, which I already told you about in this old thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...er-another-typical-German-pattern-(pic-heavy)

I´m sure it will find a new home and a good place somewhere around the world. I will ship this all around the world, for sure.

But the rules are:
- You don´t need to be a paid member, it´s open for paying or not-paying members
- You can post several times
- You should tell something about the place you life, a pic out of your living room or a step in front of your door... It can be a cornfield in Ohio or a Fjord in Norway or the coast of California. Not being Off Topic to a knife and blade forum, there should a knife swirr somewhere around. But you can also explain and tell a little story. But you can also write just something like "i´m in" ;)

I think I let this post go on about three or four weeks and the postnumber will show off the winner...

Alright guys... Go on... :)

Kind regards
Andi

P.S. I just changed the rules (on the threadopening-day)

Gruss Gott!

Ich bin Erste!

In the northern part of Bavaria, which is called Franconia, and where the Franks of Roman times were centered, is Nuremberg; a city that never gets the attention of Munich, and yet it's surrounded by some really nice places to send time. I like this city and have spent a fair portion of my life in and around this part of the world. Nuremberg sits on the Pegnitz river, which is very controlled and runs through the center of the old town. Here's a picture of the covered bridge to the Trodelmarket which is on an island in the middle of the river.

TheTrodelmarkt2.jpg

The city is guarded by the castle, and it has some of the best fortifications remaining easily available to see. They have been incorporated into the current modern infrastructure, but still exist for nice parklike stretches around the old town. Here's a shot of the main tower of the castle.

TheBerg.jpg

If you visit Nuremberg you need to start out early in the morning to catch the daily farmers market. Everybody that lives in the city center shops here for fresh produce, and the shop around the plaza are for coffee, pastries and bread, meat, and cheese. In the winter (starting around Thanksgiving and running to Crhistmas) this square is the scene of the Christmas Market and arguably the best in Germany. You can party until early morning drinking hot mulled wine and eating nurnberger wurst (special sausage) and gingerbread. It's really nice when the moon is out and lighs up the river.

These photos are from my visit this time last year. I spent a couple days walking around old haunts and havig fun. Even picked up a couple knives. Here are two, If I've bought less than two dozen of this pattern over the past 40 years I'd be suppried. It's my favorite SAK, and one of the most useful designs I know of. I've left them in airports all over the USA until I got out of the habit of having one with my keys.

Andi congrats on 1,000! You're one of the good guys, hope to see you for another grand or two :) I'll get a pic in a bit from my "lanai" as they're called in Florida. There's not as much snow on the ground here as I've seen in many of your pics :D

I took my daughter on a short hike this morning. We don't get out as much as we should, but I think it is important to spend time in the wild(ish) places. That goes double for my daughter's generation which seems to prefer playing video games to playing in the woods. Fortunately we have a lot of open spaces near our home. This picture was taken less than two miles from our front door. It is all that is left of the great John Muir's ranch. He used to take his own daughters on nature walks in these very hills.

mtwanda1.jpg

Since I was outdoors I decided to carry a puukko instead of the usual slipjoint.

mtwanda3.jpg

My daughter carried an old Imperial cattleman. She insisted on carrying a knife like Daddy, who am I to refuse? That's another good thing about slipjoints, I think they are the only knives that are toddler safe.

Nice thread Andi, thank you for starting it. Please don't consider this an entry though, I've already been blessed by our fellow forumites recently.

Thank you Andi, very kind of you!

I took these two of our front yard three days ago to show our son, who is away at college, what spring was like back home.

And for some knife content, I took this one yesterday with the White Owl in the bush that grows next to the dogwood tree which is in the foreground of the previous picture.

That's my new favorite "knife" picture. What a precious moment and memory.

"Slipjoints, toddler-safe knives."

:-)

Andi, thanks so much for the chance at your beautiful knife, but even more for your hearty contributions to this forum. I'll think more about what pictures I want to take and post and why, and will return to this thread. In the meantime, I look forward to reading/viewing everyone else's responses.

Thank you Andi for this very generous giveaway. I remember when I was working on the Statsraad Lemkuhl a couple of weeks ago, all the sailors had a Ankermesser, and some of them were really used. I`ve always wanted one, considering that I was born not far from Solingen in Germany.

My health hasn`t been good for the last couple of days, and my knee`s been acting up bad, but today I managed to go for a small walk with the dogs. This is the local lake here, around 500 meters from the house down the hill where I live. It`s a beautiful lake, and in the summer you can bathe, barbecue, fish and it`s possible to hike all the way around. That takes about 2 hours, and I used to do it every couple of days. The dogs love it there, it`s a place where they can really burn off their energy.

Please count me in, and congrats on the 1k!

I don't have any pics of the Coast I live next to, so i'll make sure to get some up ASAP

As for a short synopsis on where I live, I currently reside in Santa Barbara, CA. the Birthplace of modern commercial diving and which is what I planned on majoring in about a yr ago, but having a change of heart I have no idea now. It's an amazing small town especially the mountains right behind town which really do look gorgeous from the top.

I'm in! Congrats on 1K posts!

Well I live in the heart of the great San Joaquin Valley, one of the highest producing agricultural regions in the world. This is also home to the only other true birdsfoot style river delta in the country. I sail semiprofessionally and also do boat deliveries for people. Here are some pics from end of last season I took on a short delivery.

Total travel time was 3h5m at 6 knots. I fought the tide for the first 30 minutes and then it went slack to ebb and I picked up 0.8 kts over the ground. Wind was calm at 8-10 kts, but right on the nose. It is a small boat, 24', old and crusty looking. It is strictly a race boat, though, and a fast one as well. If it doesn't make the boat go faster, it is very low priority. I don't have any pictures of the boat, I just couldn't do it.

Warm sun, cold beer, and on the water. Only two things can make this better, and they fit into a bikini...

2011-08-05122041.jpg

Here is my morning comute traffic. My club is hosting a cruising rally so there were quite a few boats headed upstream. Here are just a few.

2011-08-05122714.jpg

2011-08-05123251.jpg

There is so much stuff out here in the Delta its crazy. Bars, marinas, ski clubs, duck clubs, wilderness areas, etc...
This is Tinsley Island owned by the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. It is a premier place, four star for sure, and I have been to a couple legendary stag cruises there.

2011-08-05125045.jpg

So let's say you own some hotels. What do you do with your money? How about buy an entire island and build a big ass house on it! This thing is masive, right about 22,000 sq.ft. the whole thing won't fit in one frame. This belongs to Conrad Hilton, yep, that Hilton family. Paris' grandfather, although I have never seen her at this house.

2011-08-05131626.jpg

And for a little contrast, one mans paradise is another mans last resort. Yes this place is inhabited...que the dualing banjo's..

2011-08-05130321.jpg

There are lots of derelects out here as well. This old crane was abandoned in the 70's I believe.

2011-08-05141436.jpg

Woohoo! Made it. This is the entrance to Owl Harbour, home of Andreas Cove Yacht Club. Several facilities share this harbour and ACYC is all the way at the back, almost another half mile from where I took this picture.

2011-08-05141500.jpg

Just because its called a yacht club, doesn't mean its nice...

2011-08-05141953.jpg

Anyways, thanx for checkin out my day on the water. Keep it real. Peace.

To stay on track, here is a little fleamarket find from this morning, for $10!

- You should tell something about the place you live, a pic out of your living room or a step in front of your door...

I currently live in Pennsylvania (USA), but my heart's home is in New Hampshire, the place of my birth and youth and where my adult self still feels the ground come up and carry me every time I'm able to return. The rocks of Mt. Washington capture the essence of what draws me there, the Ammonoosuc River finding its headwaters on the mountain's slopes and flowing down through all the land that I love. The following pictures are primarily from my last hike to the Summit, the summer before last.

A tree of/as the trail:

Cresting the treeline:

On the Rock Pile, looking back down the trail toward the Lake of the Clouds hut and slopes ascended:

On the descent, the Great Gulf:

The Granite State, indeed:

I took the following pictures this afternoon, here in my dining room in PA.

My White Mountain crokinole board, custom-made for me. The centerpiece is a replica Mt. Washington summit pin that I bought at the summit after climbing up:

The knife I had with me for the hike(s) (I did not yet know about photographing one's knife while out and about-- imagine!), with authentic, current pocket fuzz:

The small Tinker I bought for myself at 10, my second knife:

And the backdrop, a portion of our games collection:

Thanks again for all you bring to the forum, and for this opportunity.

Andi,
this is not an entry, but I wanted to thank you anyway...you and I have many things in common here, and our 1000th post came more or less at the same time (I beat you for a couple weeks ;) ) and I find your posts always interesting.
Even if I'm not "playing", I will post some pics of my homeplace as well...just for the pleasure of sharing. And since I have no pics of the wonderful inner territory of my island (not here at the moment), you will have to get by with "my" sea... ;)
